CENTRALE proposes an original dialogue between two artists and two original artworks. American Roger Ballen has been based in South Africa for more than 30 years. As one of the leading photographers of his generation, he offers an immersion into his particular world, The Theatre of the Ballenesque, while Belgian plastic artist Ronny Delrue—a painter, illustrator and sculptor, presents personal artworks and some of his Correspondances, a collection of artistic exchanges with international artists including Roger Ballen.
Insofar as they individually reveal the mystery of the human condition and soul, the two exhibitions form a whole, questioning the grey area between madness and reason, dream and reality. Through different media (photographs, videos, installations, drawings), this dialogue lifts the veil on the specificities and affinities of Ballen and Delrue: scrutinizing the unconscious through creation.
These two projects come with exceptional partnerships with major Belgian institutions : the Ancienne Belgique (Brussels), which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2019, and Ghent’s S.M.A.K.
