In association with the Department of Arts, Media and Philosophy of the University of Basel, the Visual Arts - CCC Research-based Program at HEAD – Genève is currently advertising the position of ASSISTANT HES (SNSF) + PhD position at 80% (Duration of the position: 1 year, renewable 3 times).
We invite applications for the full-time position of Doctoral Researcher for the period of December 2019 to September 2023 for the research project entitled “Decolonizing Socialism: Entangled Internationalism. An Intersectional Study of Cold War Projects from East Germany in Cinema and Cybernetics with Relevance to the 21st Century,” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNFS).
The objective of the project is a decolonial analysis of under-researched or disregarded Cold War projects with a focus on cybernetics, internationalism, art and cinema from the Global Cold War period with relevance to the 21st Century. Case studies and reference projects from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) or similar socialist states in the 20th century will be essential. The project’s cross disciplinary, practical and trans-historical approach favors candidates who show an awareness for anti-colonial movements, anti-fascist actions and solidarity initiatives from the Global Cold War period with regards to the debates of the period about technology, science, philosophy and art, and what these debates mean for us as well as how they affect us today. The position is open to Masters graduates with a background in Visual Cultures, Contemporary Arts Practices, Art Theory, Media Studies, Film Studies, Creative Digital Humanities and/or similar fields.
The PhD will be supervised by the Department of Arts, Media and Philosophy (Chair Prof. Ute Holl) of the University of Basel (degree-awarding university) in collaboration with the Department of Fine Arts HES-SO with a major in Critical Curatorial Cybermedia Studies (CCC) (Chair Prof. Doreen Mende) at HEAD – Genève. The Doctoral Researcher will be part of an international research community for the SNFS-funded project that includes a Project Collaborator also located at HEAD – Genève, the CCC PhD-Forum of the Department of Fine Arts, the PhD Colloquium at University Basel as well as researchers at the Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven and the House of World Cultures in Berlin as project partners.
Main points of the position of Doctoral Researcher
Over the course of the four years, the Doctoral Researcher will be trained in advanced research methodologies by the means of art, to participate in international conferences both in academic and artistic environments, submit articles to peer-reviewed journals, and contribute to experimental public platforms.
Profile
Artist/researcher or curator/theorist with a background in Contemporary Art Practices, Visual Cultures, Art Theory, Media Studies, Film Studies, Creative Digital Humanities, or similar fields
Completed Masters degree from “Haute École,” art academy, or university
Ability to work self-responsibly and think critically, situated
Experience working with contemporary artists and/or within art institutions
Organizational skills, reliability, social intelligence and transcultural competence
Language skills: English (speaking, reading, writing); German (reading, writing)
Main features of the position
Duration of the position: 1 year renewable (Subject to enrolment in doctoral studies at the University of Basel) from December 2019 to November 2023. The function’s class for the position of Doctoral Researcher is a class 9 - annuities 2, for the holders of a Master degree. PhD from the University of Basel after successful defence of the doctoral research project.
