Seeking four curators

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre is Aotearoa New Zealand’s contemporary art museum, and the global home of modernist filmmaker and kinetic sculptor Len Lye’s art and ideas.

Our mission is to commission, present, and collect exceptional art of the now with emphasis on Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific. As a museum located in New Plymouth, it also has a role in engaging with the diverse communities of its local region, Taranaki.

Since early 2019, the organisation has been led by Co-Directors/Chief Curators, Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh, who are now seeking four new curators to join the team: Indigenous Curator, Contemporary Art/Kairauhī Taketake Toi Onāianei; Curator Public Engagement; Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art and Collections; and  Assistant Curator, Len Lye.

The successful applicants will be joining the organisation at a moment of consolidation and reflection, heading in to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery’s 50th year in 2020. As we look to the future, curators will help steer a dynamic approach to our four key programming streams: commissioning contemporary art, bringing new perspectives on the work of Len Lye to life, putting our collection into play, and actively engaging with audiences through innovative activities.

The New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) owns and manages the Gallery on behalf of the citizens of New Plymouth. NPDC works in partnership with the Govett-Brewster Foundation, and with the Len Lye Foundation which owns and governs the Len Lye Collection housed at the Gallery.
