December 12–16, 2019
Wonderfruit encourages, develops and innovates creative solutions for sustainable living and brings together a global community to celebrate them. Wonderfruit uses its platform to catalyze creativity and make a meaningful positive impact.
As part of the Wonderfruit Festival 2019 we would like to issue an open call to designers and architects from all over the world to design one of our sustainable pavilions.
See competition details below.
Task:
To design and build a unique pavilion structure for Wonderfruit, destined to house the onsite exhibition that showcases the vision, ideas, ambition, information and hard work that goes into creating the festival each year.
Designs should:
–Embody the Wonderfruit ethos, acting as a striking beacon for its powerful brand and supporting and communicating its ethical values
–Be waterproof, sustainable, lightweight, intelligent and evolved
–Utilise local materials such as grass, bamboo, timber, mud etc. or other innovative sustainable materials
–Be 120sqm
–Celebrate craft and engineering practices, employing them to create a world class but locally relevant final design
–Be built to last for at least 5 years, with zero negative environmental impact and a sustainable after-life whether upcycled, reused or disintegrated via gradual, organic decomposition or through a more dramatic ritual dissolution
–Consider the structure’s evolution over time and its adaptation to changing environmental conditions in a tropical location
–Be radical and functional, curious and surprising, while considering—modularity, flexibility, expandability, longevity, lightness vs. solidity, etc.
–Be buildable in one month
The most successful entries will be those that best encapsulate the spirit of Wonderfruit, helping the festival to tell its story.
Eligibility:
Initial design proposals may be the work of anyone with a background in design—individuals or teams welcome.

The prize:
The winning designer/design team (max two persons) will be flown out to Thailand for one month (with travel, accommodation and expenses paid for) to work with a local architect and team of craftsmen to realise their design, staying on to attend Wonderfruit Festival 2019 and see their creation in action.
The judges:
From the postcards received Ab Rogers Design (designers of Wonderfruit 2018 and 2019) will select 20 best designs. From there, an international jury of design experts (including: Deyan Sudjic, Ab Rogers, Aric Chen, El Ultimo Grito, Lorenzo Alvarez, Rachaporn Choochuey, Dr. Singh Intrachooto and Boonserm Premthada) will whittle the responses down to the best six.
