Call for applications: MA Exhibition Studies

The MA Exhibition Studies programme at Liverpool John Moores University is immersed in the cultural life of Liverpool, with a wide international reach. It is delivered by practising curators and academics working at Tate Liverpool and Liverpool Biennial. We welcome applications for 2019 entry commencing in September 2019.

Exhibition Studies is dedicated to the practice, history, and theory of worldwide exhibition cultures and the development of curatorial practice.

Postgraduate students will engage with a range of topics that build upon exhibition cultures internationally; from the contemporary biennial to the historical collection. We understand the process of curating as a research-based activity that engages with a range of other disciplines that may diverge from art history, or other disciplines. We actively encourage applications from candidates who are working in a museum or gallery context, or those who wish to peruse a career in this field.

Programme structure
The curriculum focuses on exhibition practices and histories; collaborative practice with partner organisations; as well as curatorial studio practice, to develop research topics through project-based learning. The dissertation project consists of a written or practical component.

The programme has links with MA Curating at Aarhus University in Denmark, where joint activity is coordinated through staff and student exchanges throughout the year.

Exhibition Studies is delivered by Dr. Michael Birchall, Curator of Public Practice at Tate Liverpool, and Prof. Joasia Krysa, Head of Research, Liverpool Biennial. Both students and staff engage in cultural partnerships in Liverpool, and actively produce and partake in lectures, symposia, exhibitions, and engage with visiting curators and researchers. This is substantiated with an annual international excursion.

Research
The programme is embedded in the Exhibition Research Lab, a research group and dedicated public venue with the year round programme of visiting fellows, seminars, talks, exhibitions and publications.
