UGM I Maribor Art Gallery is proud to present the international roaming exhibition Women, (Be)coming exhibition, showing artworks that emerged from the Wom@rts project’s artistic residencies in the fields of printmaking, comics & illustration, and lens-based media. The artists had responded to Simone de Beauvoir’s groundbreaking work The Second Sex that was published 70 years ago. The international exhibition of 32 artists from over 10 different countries premieres in Maribor and is scheduled later on to roam the project partner’s exhibition grounds in Vilnius (Lithuania), Santiago de Compostela (Spain) Grand Angoulême (France), Rijeka (Croatia), and Limerick (Ireland).
In their work, the artists relate to various media, cultural, and generational experiences, asking themselves about the “nature” of the woman, her social embeddedness, about their own history and their future steps.
UGM I Maribor Art Gallery is one of ten partners in the Wom@rts project—Women’s Equal Share of Presence in the Arts and Creative Industries, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme. The project runs from 2017 until 2021 and pursues women’s equal share presence in the arts, in terms of visibility, promotion, and access to the market. Wom@rts aims to highlight and support the creativity of women from a cross-sectoral perspective, focusing on several sectors of the cultural and creative industries.
