NTU CCA Singapore announces a series of exhibitions and public programmes addressing art and its relation to urban space for the new Academic Year 2019/20.

The Impossibility of Mapping (Urban Asia)
Publication, July/August 2019
Following the lifework (1960s to 2010) of visionary Singaporean architect William S. W. Lim, this edited volume is a critical compilation of responses from artists, architects, planners, and scholars engaging with Lim’s legacy of a critical spatial practice. Emerging from a past exhibition and conference on Lim’s idea of incomplete urbanism at NTU CCA Singapore, the volume contains research essays, artworks, visual-textual documentation, and spatio-temporal maps that grapple with the complexity of Southeast Asia, offering unexpected responses to the planning and building of living cities and urban spaces. 

Siah Armajani: Spaces for the Public. Spaces for Democracy. 
Exhibition, NTU CCA Singapore, The Exhibition Hall, July 20–November 3, 2019
Celebrated Iranian-born artist Siah Armajani traversesarchitecture and conceptual art in sculptures, drawings, and public installations in his practice spanning fifty years. Informed by democratic ideologies and inspired by American vernacular architecture, his vast body of worksinclude gathering spaces for communality, emphasizing the “nobility of usefulness.” This exhibition—his first institutional presentation in Asia—unfolds along a large-scale installation, Sacco & Vanzetti Reading Room #3. A selection of models for public spaceshighlight the artist’s ideas and interests that could be summarised as “art on civic scale.”

International Award for Public Art and Symposium, NTU CCA Singapore and Mapletree Business City, October 17–20, 2019
In collaboration with Shanghai University
NTU CCA Singapore will co-host the 2019 International Award for Public Art (IAPA) ceremony as part of Culture City. Culture Scape. Art, Urban Change, and the Public Sphere. The highest achievement in Public Art worldwide conferred by the Institute for Public Art, the award recognises artistic projects that articulate art-led urbanism, place-making, community building, and social practice. On the occasion of the 2019 edition of the IAPA, NTU CCA Singapore is pleased to present an exhibition in The Lab exploring the potential of corporate engagement in publicly accessible art in Singapore, alongside a symposium featuring keynote presentations by renowned scholars, artists and curators, that hopes to stimulate debate and reflect upon global discourses of art in urban space.

Culture City. Culture Scape.: Public Art Trail and Education Programme at Mapletree Business City II

The publication is part of the Mapletree-NTU CCA Singapore collaborationon education in the field of art in public spaces.Featuring in-depth interviews with the four internationally renowned artists—Dan Graham, Zulkifle Mahmod, Tomàs Saraceno, and Yinka Shonibare— who were commissioned to develop projects forMapletree Business City II, the publication also includes a dialoguewith Edmund Cheng, Chairman of Mapletree, highlighting corporate engagement in currentreal estate developments.

Master of Arts in Museum Studies and Curatorial Practices

The one-year, course-based Masters programme is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, and is designed to prepare graduates for professional positions in a diverse cultural landscape. Offered by the NTU School of Art, Design, and Media in collaboration with NTU CCA Singapore, this unique course is centred around the everyday requirements of museummanagement, art administration, and the interpretation, in the fields of art and cultural heritage, public and private art institutions, addressing the wider sphere of curatorial engagement.
