KALEIDOSCOPE is delighted to announce a solo exhibition by artist Korakrit Arunanondchai, opening on February 21, 2019 at Spazio Maiocchi in Milan.

Born in Thailand and based in New York, artist Korakrit Arunanondchai (b. 1986) makes use of video, sculpture, painting and performance to reflect on the duality of animism and technology, activating collective emotions through a ceremonial togetherness.

With symbolic elements borrowed from Buddhist mythology, and characters drawn from his family and friends circle, Arunanondchai’s practice is a flux in which every work feeds off the previous one, building an overarching language in which animism, technology, history, and philosophy are tied together.

Featured on the cover of KALEIDOSCOPE’s current issue, Arunanondchai intersects his personal ecosystem with historical narratives—from the death of the King of Thailand to the news episode of the cave boys—navigating non-linear time and in-between spaces to explore a collective body of consciousness.

In this exhibition at Spazio Maiocchi, a recent video work (History in a room filled with people with funny names 4, 2018) and two totem-like sculptures (Workshop for Peace, 2018) evoke the mutability and metamorphosis of our material world, expanding on the artist’s concern with extinction and annihilation of the human species as a result of hyper-evolution.

The exhibition is complemented by Arunanondchai’s billboard commission in the courtyard of Spazio Maiocchi, featuring his longtime friend and fellow artist boychild; and a sculptural stage designed by the artist for a live set by Swiss-born, Lisbon-based producer Bonaventure the night of the opening. An artist book accompanying the project will be released in Spring 2019.

KALEIDOSCOPE is today’s most innovative magazine of contemporary art and visual culture, founded in 2009 at the core of a creative studio with a distinctly curatorial and interdisciplinary approach. Since October 2017, KALEIDOSCOPE’s studio and exhibition space are hosted by Spazio Maiocchi in Milan.

Spazio Maiocchi is a new social space where art, design and fashion blend to shape new cultural experiences. Originating from the convergence of visionary founding partners Carhartt WIP and Slam Jam, Spazio Maiocchi presents a cross-disciplinary program of exhibitions and events in a former-industrial complex in central Milan.
