Emerging LGBTQ visual arts residency
July 13–August 7, 2019
“The pool of amazing and talented people who applied to FIAR was just mind-boggling: clearly this is a very-much needed organization! Then, when I got out there for a visit, I really experienced the warmth and specialness of what the participants had been able to build together among themselves—I felt the love!” —Amy Sillman
“FIAR represents a great opportunity for cross generational connection between newer and more established queer artists. I loved having the chance to discover exciting work and ideas in a setting that promoted thought and dialogue over high-pressure careerism.” —Nayland Blake
Celebrating its ninth season on Fire Island in Cherry Grove, NY this year, Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR) is now accepting applications for its internationally recognized summer residency program for artists identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. LGBTQ emerging artists demonstrating new perspectives in contemporary visual art are encouraged to apply by March 24, 2019.
Five selected visual artists and for the first time, three selected poets will share a live/work space in the historically queer island hamlet of Cherry Grove, NY for a four-week program marked by intimate studio visits with, and public lectures by, renowned leaders in contemporary art and curation. The program is free to residents, who are provided with a stipend for meals and a free, modest live/work space.
2019 program
FIAR provides free modest live/work space to five artist residents who work, research, relax, and immerse themselves in the Fire Island community. During this time they are visited by a handful renowned visiting artists and art professionals who commune with residents through intimate visits, dinners, and discussions, providing support and feedback throughout the duration of program. The greater Fire Island community, and visitors from New York and Long Island, are invited to attend free public lectures by these esteemed guests of FIAR.
2019 FIAR Visiting Lecturers will include:
Keith Boadwee, artist / Clarity Haynes, painter / Stacy Szymaszek, poet, Professor at University of Montana
Application fee: 45 USD
