Headlands Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the 59 artists and collaboratives awarded for its renowned Artist in Residence program for 2019, as well as cash awards for visual arts, social practice, and writing—including two new awards from the McLaughlin Foundation. In addition, six artists and collaboratives have been selected for Project Space awards. With local and international artists from 10 states and 17 countries, the creative practitioners in this year’s lineup will begin arriving at Headlands in mid-March and will conduct four- to ten-week residencies through November 2019. The fully sponsored, live-in fellowships are designed to support and sustain the artistic process.
2019 Headlands awardees are listed below by award and discipline.
Chamberlain Award for social practice: Dread Scott
The Chamberlain Award supports artists who display exceptional merit in the discipline of social practice with a fully sponsored residency and a 5,000 USD cash prize.
Chiaro Award for painting: Monique van Genderen
The Chiaro Award is a fully sponsored residency and 15,000 USD cash prize for an accomplished mid-career painter residing in the United States.
Larry Sultan Photography Award: Jonathan Calm
Presented in partnership with McEvoy Foundation for the Arts and Pier 24 Photography, the Sultan Award recognizes a photographer with a fully sponsored residency and a 10,000 USD cash prize.
McLaughlin Children’s Trust Award: Tongo Eisen-Martin
This inaugural award supports an exemplary writer with a fully sponsored Headlands residency and a 10,000 USD cash prize.
McLaughlin Foundation Award: Tomie Arai
Also new this year, the McLaughlin Foundation Award recognizes an established visual artist with a clear dedication to their practice and a substantial body of work, with a fully sponsored residency and a 10,000 USD cash prize.
Project Space Residencies: Kelly Akashi, Martha Colburn, Rodney Ewing, Anna Fitch & Banker White, Kori Newkirk, and Stéphanie Solinas
These artists will host open studio hours and a culminating Project Space exhibition during their stay.

Founded in 1982, Headlands Center for the Arts operates a multidisciplinary, international arts center best known for its dynamic public programs and highly lauded artist residency. Located in the coastal wilderness of the Marin Headlands, within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Headlands’ historic nine-building campus is dedicated to process-driven exploration and risk-taking contemporary art in all disciplines. Headlands’ Artists Programs provide visual artists, performers, musicians, and writers with opportunities for research, professional development, and peer-to-peer exchange at critical times in their careers.
