Opening: June 28, 2019, 7pm
The international group exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Ravensburg focuses on the face as a medium between the Self and the Other, as an interface between presence and representation. In dialogue between works from the early 20th century and contemporary artists and in interplay with the Selinka Collection, the face proves to be the setting for emotions which are molded by the respective individual’s self-image as well as by social conventions.
The face is simultaneously a site of presentation and concealment, of staging and withdrawal. With four thematic emphases—“Privatim: Sleep-Ecstasy-Death,” “Beyond Stereotyped Roles,” “Expressive Physiognomy” and “Mirrorings and Doppelgängers”—the exhibition investigates the face within the dynamic field of self-expression, self-image and social codes. Whoever regards a face, either of oneself or of someone else, seeks to make a picture; simultaneously, in an exchange of gazes with someone else, one’s attention is directed to oneself, to one’s own roles and self-images. An inner dialogue thereby makes it possible to experience the face as a reflection of the Self in the Other.
With works by Marina Abramović & Ulay, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Dieter Appelt, Marjoleine Boonstra, Robbie Cooper, Marlene Dumas, Erró, Valie Export, Asta Gröting, Nan Goldin, Erich Heckel, Zhang Huan, Alexej von Jawlensky, Alex Katz, Max Kaus, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Jürgen Klauke, Oskar Kokoschka & Hermine Moos, Georg Kolbe, Bjørn Melhus, Zanele Muholi, Edvard Munch, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Arnulf Rainer, Bettina Rheims, Ugo Rondinone, Aura Rosenberg, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Cindy Sherman, Andreas Slominski, John Smith, Albrecht Tübke, Mark Wallinger

About the Kunstmuseum Ravensburg:
The Kunstmuseum Ravensburg was opened in 2013; it is the first certified museum in the passive-house construction style. Designed by the Stuttgart architectural firm Lederer + Ragnarsdóttir + Oei, the museum has been awarded such honors as the German Architecture Prize in 2013; it was declared “Museum of the Year 2015” by the International Association of Art Critics (AICA). The basis for the museum is the Selinka Collection, assembled over four decades by the former advertising consultant Peter Selinka (1924–2006) together with his wife. The collection includes works of German Expressionism as well as by the artist groups CoBrA and SPUR; it complements a program of temporary exhibitions dedicated to the art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
