Jefta van Dinther’s work has been a constant presence at HAU Hebbel am Ufer and Tanz im August. The Quiet brings together five women in an unsettling choreography of the ordinary, calling attention to that which is transmitted across generations. They are quiet in action, set in motion by expressions of oral traditions. Reciting, chanting and praying, they forcefully move into and out of defined and defining patterns, propelling the quotidian into transcendence. Van Dinther’s new HAU co-production engages with time in some of its overlooked forms: the taking of time, the passing of time, the falling out of time.” Together with the dancers Lisa Drake, Kristine Slettevold, Alexandra Campbell, Agnieszka Dlugoszewska and Cecilia Roos as well as with his long-standing collaborators Minna Tiikkainen, David Kiers, and Cristina Nyffeler, Jefta van Dinther continues the intertwining of space, sound, light and body that characterises his choreographies.” His works deal with notions of illusion, the visible and the invisible, synesthesia, darkness, labour, the uncanny, affect, voice, and image.
Jefta van Dinther is a dancer and choreographer. Educated at the Amsterdam School of Arts in Amsterdam, he works between Stockholm and Berlin. Among other works, he has produced IT’S IN THE AIR (2009) together with Mette Ingvartsen, Kneeding (2010), GRIND (2011), a collaboration with the lighting designer Minna Tiikkainen and sound designer David Kiers, The Blanket Dance (2011) with Frederic Gies and DD Dorvillier, THIS IS CONCRETE (2012) together with Thiago Granato, and As It Empties Out (2014). He has also made two large-scale productions for Cullbergbaletten: Plateau Effect (2013) and Protagonist (2016). Protagonist was presented at HAU Hebbel am Ufer in January 2018. As a performer he has worked with artists such as Xavier Le Roy and Ivana Müller.
