Humans have been enshrining and memorializing their dead for millennia. While rituals and symbolic forms vary widely across cultures and religions, all are rooted in similar desires: honoring a life and coping with loss.
EXIT Architecture: Speculations for the Hereafter is a speculative look at designing for the afterlife in all of its potential architectural forms and new ways of marking our exit. The exhibition presents a critical and projective look at the present and future of this realm of design—through personal and individual examples of design for the hereafter, as well as approaches that affect or can be adopted by many.
EXIT Architecture features contributions from: AD-WO, Studio Ames, ANAH, BEAU Architects, Richard Ceccanti Aston, Bade Stageberg Cox, Roderick Cruz, JeongChoi Works, KONYK Architecture, Giann Matias, Aleksandr Mergold, Michaela Metcalfe, Yongwoo Park, Jason Vigneri-Beane, and Lebbeus Woods.
EXIT Architecture is curated by Warren James, and Julia van den Hout, and Kyle May.
Warren James is an architect and urban designer based in Manhattan. He is the Director of Art Omi: Architecture. Julia van den Hout is founder and director of Original Copy, a communications office specializing in editorial, curatorial, and research projects within architecture. Kyle May is the founder and principal at Kyle May, Architect PC, and Editor in Chief of CLOG.
Art Omi: Architecture facilitates projects exploring the intersection of architecture, art and landscape by architects. Nestled within the campus of Art Omi, this program offers pristine, 60-acre fields designated to cultivate the production of physical structures such as pavilions, installations, landscape interventions, and constructed environments. In addition, the program encourages the integration of all varieties of related media, ideas, propositions and curated exhibitions in a landscaped setting. Since January 2016, Manhattan-based architect Warren James has served as Director of Art Omi: Architecture.
EXIT Architecture is made possible, in part, by support from Bruce Ehrmann and Sandi Slone, and Jacquline Horowitz.
