Rundgang is the annual event in which the Städelschule in Frankfurt opens its doors to the public. Over the course of three days, students from the classes of the professors Johan Bettum, Judith Hopf, Hassan Khan, Tobias Rehberger, Willem de Rooij, Amy Sillman, Theodore Spyropoulos, Haegue Yang and interim professor Gerard Byrne exhibit their practices and current interests. Works are shown across the two main locations; the nearby Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum features moving image and film productions; students from the Städelschule Architecture Class (SAC) present recent projects at both Dürerstraße 24 and 10; and the Curatorial Studies program hosts the Water Cooler Talks series, directing attention to curatorial concerns and methods.
Founded in 1817 the Städelschule supports open spaces for art and critical thinking through a variety of formats and discourses. Seminars in philosophy, art theory and art history are conducted by professors Daniel Birnbaum, Isabelle Graw and Philippe Pirotte. Winter semester visiting faculty includes Nikolas Gambaroff, Bonaventure Ndikung, Bunny Rogers, Wu Tsang and Mark von Schlegell. For SAC, guest professors Beatriz Colomina, Peter Trummer and Mark Wigley have supervised specializations and seminars.
The public lecture program of the Städelschule recently featured Ho Rui An, Paul Clinton, Stephanie Comilang, Tim Griffin, Michal Heiman, Bojana Kunst, Carsten Meyer, Dan Mitchell, Kwasi Ohene-Ayeh and Adam Szymczyk. To mark the twentieth anniversary of the program, the publication Städelschule Lectures 1 will be launched during Rundgang. It is the first in a series of thematically selected lectures, offering insights into the newest history and exchange of ideas at the school.
An important feature of the Städelschule is Portikus. Since its foundation in 1987, Portikus has been dedicated to exhibiting, publishing and discussing the work of emerging as well as established artists. Tala Madani’s exhibition Oven Light on view during Rundgang is the first institutional presentation in Germany by the Tehran-born and Los Angeles-based artist. Her recent serialized paintings and animations use light, both as motif and idea, to draw out the underlying dark sides to childish expressions, violent fantasies and animal instincts.
