Marres presents The Floor is Lava, a set of spectacular works that immerse visitors in a landscape populated with human scale sculptures and molded portraits. This is the first solo exhibition of Dutch artists Sander Breure and Witte van Hulzen. Dates: March 17 through August 4, 2019.
For The Floor is Lava, the artists fill Marres with a series of amazing sculptures, featuring expressive faces and bodies put together with stick legs, half torso’s and loosely hanging pieces of cloth. Set on veritable roofs and in vivid tableaux, the sculptures seem to be actors in search of a play. Frozen in time, they mimic our daily need to put on masks and play roles. The title derives from a children’s game, but the lava also refers to a world that is spinning beyond our control and in which all that is solid melts into air.
Sander Breure and Witte van Hulzen
Sander Breure and Witte van Hulzen’s work has been shown in solo and group presentations at home and abroad, including at MACBA Barcelona and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen Rotterdam in 2018, Centraal Museum Utrecht in 2017 and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 2014. They have been artists in residence at CCA Zamek Ujazdowski Warsaw in 2015, at the Foundation of the Arts NYFA New York in 2012, at Hangar Barcelona, 2010 and Platform Garanti, Istanbul in 2009. Their work was awarded the Charlotte Köhlerprize in 2018, first prize at the Seoul New Media Festival in 2016, and the René Coelho Prize and the TENT Academy Award in 2009. They are represented by tegenboschvanvreden, Amsterdam.
