The spring 2019 semester at Columbia GSAPP includes a full schedule of lectures, conferences, and special events that bring together a broad range of experts and collaborators to discuss climate response, employing data and new forms of technology in design and representation, and engagement with the most critical issues of our time.
Following is a selection of the semester’s highlights; please visit the website event calendar to see the full schedule. All activities are free and open to the public.
Empathy + Immersion
February 1, 1pm, Room 114, Avery Hall
This afternoon discussion asks: What if new types of representation have the potential to accomplish a more immersive output, with the ability to communicate a narrative as well as physics, construction, and sequence? What architectural language has yet to be created by a new found form of projection? Participants include Jessica Brillhart, Steven K. Feiner, Keiichi Matsuda, and Frank Rose. Organized by Lindsey Wikstrom ‘16 MArch.
Record/Replay: Data, Technology, and Experimental Preservation
February 15, 9:30am, Wood Auditorium, Avery Hall
The 2019 Fitch Colloquium explores the future of historic preservation through the lens of experimental approaches to digital documentation, analysis, interpretation, archiving, sharing, visualization, and re-materialization of data. Internationally recognized experts from a varied range of disciplines will unpack their work and speculate on the conceptual changes that might emerge in response to the current upheaval in technology. Participants include Arnaud Baernhoft, Carlos Bayod, Carlos Benaïm, Caitlin Blanchfield ‘14 MSCCCP, Ian Bogost, Pilar Bosch Roig, Chance Coughenour, David Gissen, Frédéric Kaplan, Hannah Lewi, Farzin Lotfi-Jam ‘12 MSAAD, Emily Spratt, and Yves Ubelmann. Organized by Jorge Otero-Pailos.
Offsetted
Exhibition Opening: February 21, 6:30pm, Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery, Buell Hall
Discussion: February 22, 7pm, e-flux, 311 East Broadway
Conceived and designed by Cooking Sections (Alon Schwabe and Daniel Fernández Pascual), this immersive exhibition comprising matter from New York City trees—including bark, branches, stumps, leaves, and clippings—will assemble a constellation of narratives about the political and economic interests that have both protected and displaced the city’s trees under the pressures of urban development.
On the occasion of the opening of Offsetted, Alon Schwabe and Daniel Fernández Pascual participate in a discussion on environmental justice and the rights of trees together with Mari Margil (CELDF) and Elizabeth Yeampierre (UPROSE). Moderated by Felicity D. Scott.
Climate Change at the Building Scale
February 22, 1pm and April 5, 1pm, Wood Auditorium, Avery Hall
This series of summits brings together architects and researchers from around the world who are directly addressing climate change and environmental responsibility in their design work. Part I participants include bioMason, Cooking Sections, Encore Heureux, Michael Green Architecture, Territorial Agency, and Ultramoderne. Part II participants include A00, HUSOS, SKREI, Aziza Chaouni, and others. Organized by David Benjamin ‘05 MArch and Andrés Jaque.
