Announcing 7th Cycle of Residencies Programme (2020/2021)

NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore) is pleased to announce the artists selected for the 7th cycle of its Residencies Programme (April 2020–March 2021):

Rand Abdul Jabbar (Iraq/United Arab Emirates), Dana Awartani (Saudi Arabia), Lêna Bùi (Vietnam), Isabel Carvalho (Portugal), Danilo Correale (Italy/United States), Nolan Oswald Dennis (Zambia/South Africa), Taloi Havini (Autonomous Region of Bougainville/Australia), Diana Lelonek (Poland), Liu Yu (Taiwan), Elia Nurvista (Indonesia), Sim Chi Yin (Singapore/United Kingdom), Marianna Simnett (United Kingdom), Yuichiro Tamura (Japan), Marvin Tang (Singapore), Boedi Widjaja (Indonesia/Singapore).

NTU CCA Singapore is committed to facilitating the production and circulation of knowledge by supporting the process of artistic research through its Residencies Programme. The Programme is fully funded and provides artists with free space and unstructured time to develop their research and experiment with their practice without the pressure of production requirements. Dedicated to established and emerging artists from Singapore and abroad, this studio-based programme serves as a platform for critical exchange in Southeast Asia, embracing diverse expressions of creative enquiry and valuing the open-ended nature of artistic research.

Artists-in-Residence are offered a studio space and a monthly stipend. International artists are also provided with shared accommodation and travel costs. During their residency, they are supported by the Centre’s curatorial team to develop their research and actively engage with the local arts community and visiting Curators-in-Residence. The scope of the artists’ practice is conveyed to the public through a wide range of public programmes including open studios, artist talks, panel discussions, screenings, and performances. As NTU CCA Singapore is a national research centre of Nanyang Technological University, residents can also establish connections with the university’s faculty and facilities, in particular at the NTU School of Art, Design, and Media.

Candidates for the 7th cycle of the Residencies Programme were identified through a collective process which relied on nominations put forth by curators from around the world. The final group of recipients of the residency has been selected by a review panel comprising: Patrick D. Flores (Professor, Department of Art Studies, University of the Philippines and Curator, Jorge B. Vargas Museum, Manila, Philippines), Dr. Sujatha Arundathi Meegama (Assistant Professor, School of Art, Design and Media, NTU), Dr. Adele Tan (Senior Curator, National Gallery Singapore), Natalie Tan (Assistant Director, Sector Development (Visual Arts), National Arts Council Singapore) and chaired by Ute Meta Bauer (Founding Director, NTU CCA Singapore and Professor, School of Art, Design and Media, NTU). 

As the Programme reaches its sixth year, Dr. Anna Lovecchio, Curator, Residencies, shares: “We are proud to continue supporting artists through the Residencies Programme. It is a privilege to host such a diverse community of artists from all over the globe and work closely with them to advance their research interests. While research-driven residencies often eschew measurable outcomes, they provide an invaluable and sustainable framework to nurture artistic practice outside of the widespread imperatives of production and profit.”
