Program directors and core faculty Nicholas Muellner and Catherine Taylor welcome Stephanie Barber, Lucas Blalock, Danielle Dutton, Tonya Foster, Justine Kurland, Drew Sawyer and Paul Soulellis as the summer 2019 Image Text Ithaca MFA Faculty.
2019 ITI faculty bios:
Stephanie Barber’s films and videos have screened in solo and group shows at MoMA, NY; The Tate Modern; The Whitney Museum; The Paris Cinematheque; The Walker Art Center; MOCA Los Angeles, The Wexner Center for Art, among other galleries, museums and festivals. Her books include, Night Moves; these here separated…; and All The People. Barber is currently a resident artist at MICA in Baltimore, MD.
Lucas Blalock is a photographer and writer living in Brooklyn, NY. He has exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Art, MoMA PS1, Hauser and Wirth, and Marian Goodman Gallery amongst others. Blalock’s work has been featured in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Aperture, Frieze, Mousse, and Foam. Blalock has also published a number of books; most recently, A Grocer’s Orgy (Primary Information).
Danielle Dutton is the author of the books Margaret the First (Catapult), SPRAWL (Siglio), and Attempts at a Life (Tarpaulin Sky Press), and she wrote the texts for artist Richard Kraft’s Here Comes Kitty: A Comic Opera (Siglio). Her work has appeared in Harper’s, BOMB, Fence, The Paris Review, The White Review, etc. She is co-founder and editor of the feminist press Dorothy, a publishing project. She teaches at Washington University in St. Louis.
Tonya M. Foster is the author of the bilingual chapbook La Grammaire des Os and the poetry collection A Swarm of Bees in High Court. A co-editor of Third Mind: Creative Writing through Visual Art, Foster’s work has been published in Best American Experimental Writing (2016), boundary2, Callaloo, and elsewhere. Foster has received fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Graduate Center, CUNY, the Macdowell Colony, the Pan African Literary Festival, and elsewhere. She is an Assistant Professor at California College of the Arts.
Justine Kurland, known for her utopian photographs of American landscapes and their fringe communities, has spent the better part of the last twenty years on the road. Recent work returns home after so long on the road. Justine Kurland received her BFA from SVA and her MFA from Yale. Her work has been exhibited extensively in the U.S. and internationally including at MoMA, NY, the Detroit Institute of Art; the Wexner Center; and Fotodok, the Netherlands. She was recently the focus of exhibitions at Mitchell-Innes and Nash and Higher Pictures.
Drew Sawyer is the Phillip Leonian and Edith Rosenbaum Leonian Curator of Photography at the Brooklyn Museum, and has previously held curatorial positions at the Columbus Museum of Art, MoMA, NY and the Guggenheim Museum. He holds a Ph.D. in Art History and Archaeology from Columbia University, and is a specialist in the history of experimental and radical documentary practices. His recent exhibitions include Isaac Julien: Looking for Langston, Allan Sekula: Aerospace Folktales and Other Stories; and Family Pictures, which explored the legacy of Roy DeCarava’s landmark 1955 book The Sweet Flypaper of Life.
Paul Soulellis is an artist and educator based in Providence, RI. His practice includes teaching, writing, and experimental publishing, with a focus on queer methodologies and network culture. He is the founder of Library of the Printed Web, a physical archive devoted to web-to-print artists’ books, zines and other printout matter, now housed at MoMA Library. In 2018 he began QUEER.ARCHIVE.WORK, a collaborative zine project that aims to circulate non-normative work by artists and writers from historically marginalized positions. He is faculty at RISD and a contributing editor at Rhizome.
