The next Future Architecture Creative Exchange (February 13–15, 2019) at the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) in Ljubljana will again represent the most insightful annual gathering around European architecture, and showcase ideas and trends for the future development of architecture and the profession.
“The number of projects and initiatives that establish new forms of practicing architecture, is certainly growing,” says platform leader and director of MAO Matevž Čelik. “It’s important to emphasize that the vast majority of the nearly 700 young professionals who have applied in this year’s Call for Ideas develop their projects in new areas of operation and in close connection with the systemic changes at work.”
The Focus Talks, on the first day of the event, will feature Giovanna Borasi, chief curator at the CCA and editor of the book The Other Architect. The keynote speakers at the conference will also be architects who run well established practices today, but develop them in a constant search for alternative architectural tools and strategies: Gustavo Utrabo, Aleph Zero architects, RIBA International Prize 2018 winners; Freek Persyn, 51N4E Architects, European Urban Public Space Prize 2018 winners; and Špela Videčnik, OFIS Architects. The Focus Talks will be chaired by Mika Savela, editor-in-chief of the Finnish Architectural Review and 2016 Future Architecture Alumni.
The Matchmaking Conference will feature 25 emerging professionals that have submitted their ideas to the Future Architecture Call for Ideas. This year’s Call attracted a record 357 applications from 60 countries. Curators and artistic directors of 24 platform member organizations and 2018 Future Architecture alumni have selected 21 ideas by Céline Baumann (Switzerland), Katerina Frejlachova, Miroslav Pazdera, Tadeas Riha, Martin Spicak (Czech Republic), Daniel Norell, Einar Rodhe (Sweden), Urban Works Agency (Janette Kim, Neeraj Bhatia, Antje Steinmuller, Christopher Roach) (USA), Forum for Architecture Theory (Fabio Don, Marco Zelli) (Switzerland), Shift (Elizaveta Dorrer, Dmitry Alferov, Arthur Röing Baer, Christian Lavista) (Germany), Spaces like actions (Marco Ferrari, Cristina Gallizioli, Maria Giulia Milani) (Italy), Sonja Dragovic (Montenegro), Traumnovelle (Léone Drapeaud, Manuel Leon Fanjul, Johnny Leya, Roxane Le Grelle, Sébastien Lacomblez, Claire Trotignon, Philippe Braquenier, Jurgen Maelfeyt) (Belgium), Meisje Trabajo (Netherlands), para-sight (Georgios Themistokleous)(Cyprus), Elian Stefa (Albania), Charlotte Malterre-Barthes, Dubravka Sekulić (Switzerland), Yuan Chun Liu (Cam Liu) (Netherlands), SO? (Sevince Bayrak, Oral Göktaş) (Turkey), Outsider (Slovenia), Lodovica Guarnieri (Netherlands), Ateliermob/Working with the 99% (Portugal), Klodiana Millona (Netherlands), Vojtěch Rada (Czech Republic), Giorgia Scognamiglio, Lorenzo Zandri (UK). Benart Shala (Kosovo) has been selected by the public in the online vote-in. The last of the speakers includes winners of the Young Talent Architecture Award (YTAA) 2018 by Fundació Mies van der Rohe: Julio Gotor Valcárcel (Switzerland), Hendrik Brinkmann (Germany) and Matthew Gregorowski (UK).
Over the course of the event, the Architecture Fair will provide a forum for architects or architecture offices, institutions, producers, curators and other professionals to present their projects, connect and meet partners for projects and stay abreast of the latest developments in architecture.
With its Creative Exchange in Ljubljana, the platform will launch the 2019 European Architecture Program—a series of five exhibitions, four conferences, three lecture series, three workshops, two summer schools, a new volume of Archifutures and more, which will take place in 17 cities around Europe.
