Call for Scholarship applications 2019
2019 is promising to be an exciting year at The New Centre for Research & Practice. This will be the first year with Reza Negarestani as the head of our Critical Philosophy Program, bringing fresh thinkers and scholars to our ranks. We would like to welcome Jean-Pierre Caron, Anna Longo, and Thomas Moynihan to the list of our current Instructors which includes, ANON, Adam Berg, Jaya Klara Brekke, Katerina Kolozova, Jason LaRiviere, Davor Löffler, Daniel Sacilotto, Sam Sackeroff, Moses Serubiri, Anne-Françoise Schmid, Aaron Schuster and Inigo Wilkins. This year, we are offering several scholarships for the spring/summer 2019 certificate programs. To apply, please complete this form and Email us at registrar [at] thenewcentre.org with a cover letter outlining why you are an ideal candidate along with a writing sample. The deadline for applications is Friday, December 21, 2018, 11:59 pm EST.
The New Centre continues to offer graduate-level certificates in Critical Philosophy, Art & Curatorial Practices, Social & Political Thought, Media & Technology and Transdisciplinary Research and Practice. Additionally, an ongoing Graduate School Preparation Group meets regularly to help those working their way towards or through Ph.D. and Masters programs. A Parallel Academic Group is also available for Researchers and Students who regardless of institutional status would like to further their interests.
In 2018, a number of events and projects debuted at The New Centre. Francois Laruelle’s first book, Phenomenon and Difference, was recently translated by New Centre Member Lindsay Lerman. We are excited to announce that it is set for publication in early 2019 by New Centre’s publishing platform Tripleampersand in collaboration with Aleatory Books. Another book scheduled for publication early next year is New Centre’s first collection of writing from our Instructors, Researchers, and Students.
In the fall of 2018, two seminars were developed by The New Centre for the fellows of Digital Earth: Theories of Knowledge in the Age of Planetary Scale Computation and Methodologies of Artistic Practice Today. Digital Earth is a six-month-long fellowship for artists and designers based in Africa or Asia, working across a variety of media, who investigate the materiality and immateriality of the current digital reality. From December 17 to 21, 2018, a selected group of Digital Earth fellows will travel to Moscow to participate in a week-long workshop especially designed for them at Strelka Institute.
Based on the success of our collaboration with Digital Earth, we have designed a series of upcoming seminars featuring a different Instructor for each session covering significant issues in the fields of art, curatorial practice, theory and philosophy, architecture, and art history.
This year, The New Centre helped sponsor Sofia Queer Forum 2018 held at the City Museum’s Galeriya Vaska Emanuilova. Curated by Mohammad Salemy and Patrick Schabus, the forum included works by Alphabet Collection, Bruce LaBruce, Barbara Hammer, Viron Erol Vert, and Borjana Ventzislavova. The New Centre has teamed up with Spike Berlin to host a series of events featuring our Instructors, Researchers, and Students. In October, Mohammad Salemy was in conversation with ANON, the authors of The #AltWoke Manifesto, to explore their framework of negativity since the publication of their Manifesto by The New Centre in 2017. You can see a video from the event here. We will return to Spike Berlin in December to co-host philosopher Klaus Speidel’s lecture “Stories of Art in the Enrichment Economy.” On January 19, as part of Transmediale’s Vorspiel, our Parallel Academia group will present a collection of videos and a series of conversations in which researchers and students discuss their work with instructors. The event will culminate in the Berlin debut of Correa’s 2015 film #artoffline and a discussion between Patrick Schabus and the filmmaker Manuel Correa. Alan Diaz and Nathalie Agostini co-chair the event.
