The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna is delighted to introduce the Artists-in-Residence in 2018/19: Helen Zeru and Roberto Winter as well as Cecilia Traslaviña González.
With the Artist-in-Residence program, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna enables artists from so-called “third countries” (non-EU countries) the possibility of a three-month residency. The artists are affiliated with the Institute of Fine Arts and hold workshops for students at the Academy as well as artist talks.
The Artist-in-Residency is a co-operation with magdas, the social business hotel of Caritas Vienna. The program is funded by the proceeds of the Academy Charity Auction, which takes place every January during the “Rundgang,” the open studio days of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. www.akbild.ac.at
Helen Zeru (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) is a multimedia visual artist whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Within her practice, Zeru works with context-based performances and works with the idea of transmitting the real event and the acting event, different forms of the same work through different media. For example, transmitting a certain cultural event, history… in to performance then in to a video work then designing manual drawing, and through this process see what are the forms that are transmittable and non-transmittable. Recent works and projects have been researching on formal and informal art institutions in relation to informal economy and how an informal economy can be a supportive structure to an informal art institution, within countries like Ethiopia where the majority of the economy is informal.

Roberto Winter (São Paulo, Brazil) engages in the production of things that could make the current state of affairs graspable, explicit, unbearable and, eventually, help lead to its inexorable overcoming. A production which stems from—and ends in—the concrete realities of words, objects and materials—and their absences, guided by questions such as: Do time and space exist? How so? Are there inescapable intrinsic material truths to things? What seems absent could also not be non-existent (ideology)? Is a disassembly of the void into the material realm (and vice-versa) a possible way of achieving critique? How does one engage the spectacle, the pornography of freedom and autonomy: ideology in social, cultural, political, economic and artistic fields?

Cecilia Traslavña González (Bogotá, Colombia) is an animator and visual artist, a professor and researcher. Her work has different approaches: a personal side where she explores memories and the unconscious from nonlinear narratives in consonance with techniques of the visual arts. Also, she has collaborated with many artists and audio-visual schools in the creation of collective artworks addressing topics from an experimental perspective.
