ASIA NOW Paris Asian Art Fair continues once more to explore and immerse itself into the contemporary Asian art scene with a 4th edition taking place from October 17 to 21 in its Haussmannian location at 9 avenue Hoche, 75008 Paris. A highlight of this 2018 edition, the Japanese Platform, curated by Emmanuelle de Montgazon in association with Isabelle Olivier, will bring to light young, rising stars and emerging galleries of the Japanese art scene.
A focus on the Japanese art scene
Ten cutting-edge Japanese galleries will be housed in a dedicated exhibition space designed by Sou Fujimoto Architects. Among the Special Projects, Transitional, an exhibition curated by Reiko Tsubaki and Hirokazu Tokuyama, curators at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, offers an exclusive preview of select works by emerging artists from Japan whose works will be shown at “Roppongi Crossing 2019” in Tokyo. The iconic Tokyo-based artist Makoto Aida presents, for the first time in Europe, his installation 2nd Floorism (Reconstruction), which examines the social and environmental problems facing urban areas in Japan. Bringing together sculpture and performance, internationally-renowned Japanese artist Teppei Kaneuji pursues his signature series White Discharge, for which he recycles and assembles every day and found objects to discuss the contemporary Japanese consumer culture. In addition to the Special Projects, the Japanese Platform will host on-site and off-site film screenings and discussions—about and by artists—including the selection of the London-based non-profit art center White Rainbow who will present a series of video works by young Japanese artists including Yu Araki, Shimabuku, Aki Sasamoto, Chikako Yamashiro, Chim↑Pom, and Meiro Koizumi.
Special Projects
As part of the rich special project programme, the young Singaporean artist Sarah Choo-Jing, recently exhibited at the 57th Venice Biennale, presents a 5-channel immersive video installation, Accelerated Intimacy. Yu Hong, one of the most representative artists of New Realist Painting in China, unveils a new Virtual Reality project, She’s Already Gone, presented by Khora Contemporary. Other projects include The Tea Set, a selection of clay works by Taiwanese artist Rain Wu, and an exhibition of small-scale paintings by Filipino artist Yeo Kaa.
Conversation Platform
ASIA NOW welcomes experts in Japanese and Asian Art, including Yuko Hasegawa (Artistic Director, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo), Catherine David (Chief curator, Centre Pompidou), Kodama Kanazawa (Senior Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs, Towada Art Center), and Akiko Miki (International Artistic Director, Benesse Art Site, Naoshima) and Sou Fujimoto (Architect) with Hans Ulrich Obrist who will discuss topics ranging from “Art after Fukushima” to “Takashi Murakami’s Superflat Collection.” The platform will also feature encounters with artists, including Makoto Aida, Teppei Kaneuji, and Kohei Nawa.
Video screenings
This year, ASIA NOW unveils an ever-richer video programme. CoBo Social presents a selection of video works by Asian artists created over the course of the past twenty years. Journalist and writer Patricia Chen will introduce two documentaries, The 24-Hour Art Practice, and Uli Sigg: China’s Art Missionary, on the respective lives of Indonesian collector Dr. Oei and Swiss Asian art pioneer Uli Sigg. Odile Burluraux (Curator, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris) also presents a selection of animated Chinese films.
