Women Out of Joint is a festival promoted and organized by Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea and by IILA Organizzazione internazionale italo-latino americana. During 2018 IILA has decided to consolidate its commitment with gender policies by working on the SDG5 (Sustainable Development Goals) Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, within the 2030 United Nations Agenda.
Women Out of Joint is the opportunity for Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea to show the recently acquired Carla Lonzi’s archive (Italian feminist, artist and art critic) to the public. This is a unique occasion for scholars and militants to finally access precious documentation whose value for art history and the history of gender and feminism is internationally acknowledged.
In the beginning of the 70’s Carla Lonzi defined feminism as “my party”: with the Women Out of Joint festival, Galleria Nazionale wants to pay tribute to this theorist and militant, in a three-day party where everybody is invited.
By proposing meetings, workshops, performances, videos and readings, Women Out of Joint offers the opportunity for an exchange among the practices of artists, art historians, performers, militants, theorists, designers, architects coming from an international and interdisciplinary background. Among them: Julia Antivilo, Maria Luisa Boccia, Annarosa Buttarelli, Silvia Calderoni, Valie Export, Gaia Giuliani, Rosa Ferré, Claire Fontaine, Cecilia Fajardo Hill, Carmen María Jaramillo, Bianca Menna, Michela Murgia, Marina Valcarenghi, Lea Vergine…
Being a woman is a sort of poetics, a singular art that has no boundaries or present norms: Women Out of Joint’s guests are not afraid of pronouncing the “feminist” word, they choose to challenge, and, through multiple expressions at times autonomously, at times collectively, to overturn all forms of subalternity.
