In Value in the Virtual, the London-based architecture studio Space Popular present an immersive installation exploring the role of architecture in the design of virtual worlds. Articulating a direction for architects and designers that interfaces with cognitive science and colour theory, the installation takes the form of two simultaneously active—one physical and one virtual. Here, full-scale fragments of Stockholm distort and replicate to explore how material values between physical and virtual environments could and should be radically recast.
With Value in the Virtual, Boxen becomes a shared space and testing ground for discussion about the role of architecture in the burgeoning virtual sphere. During and beyond the exhibition, a virtual layer of Boxen (Voxen) can be visited in Sansar—a social VR platform accessible by anyone, anywhere, and at any time. Visitors to the virtual experience are able to interact in real time with visitors in Stockholm.
Space Popular
Lara Lesmes and Fredrik Hellberg, both graduates of the Architectural Association in London, founded Space Popular in Bangkok in 2013. Based in London since 2016, the practice works at multiple scales from furniture and interior design to architecture, urbanism, and the design of virtual worlds. The duo have taught at INDA (Bangkok) and are currently Unit Masters at the Architectural Association. Beyond their academic experience, they have ongoing and realised built projects in both Europe and Asia.
Boxen at ArkDes
Boxen is a platform for fast-changing, experimental projects at ArkDes, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design. It provides space for alternative voices to inspire discussions about architecture, design, and their relationship to society by promoting radical and responsive installations, exhibitions, events and dialogues by and between architects, designers, and thinkers. Designed by the emerging architecture studio Dehlin Brattgård, Boxen opened in June 2018.
Space Popular: Value in the Virtual has been curated by James Taylor-Foster, Curator of Contemporary Architecture and Design at ArkDes.
