Pioneer Works is pleased to invite artists to apply for our 2019 Visual Arts Studio Residency.

Overview
For six-month periods (March-August or September–February), our Visual Arts Studio Residents enjoy newly-renovated studios, a series of curatorial visits, and access to Pioneer Works’ expansive facilities.

Pioneer Works is committed to supporting cutting edge and contemporary work in all stages of progress. We encourage applications from artists eager to explore new avenues, expand on their research, and engage with the Pioneer Works community through our unique, public-facing studios and dedicated monthly Open Studios program at Second Sundays, a free event series presented on the second Sunday of every month.

While at Pioneer Works, residents benefit from resources including a technology and VR lab, music studio, darkroom, print lab, bookstore, and garden, as well as from bi-monthly curatorial visits with New York and international art community figures arranged by our Residency Director.

Past Pioneer Works residents include Maria Antelman, Louis Fratino, Doreen Garner, Gerard & Kelly, and Curtis Talwst Santiago. While at Pioneer Works, residents have published books, recorded soundtracks for videos, printed 3D sculptures, explored new works in VR, programmed community-engaged projects, collaborated with neuroscientists, taught classes, and held performances during Second Sundays.

Logistics
It is important to note that unless an artist is funded externally, we cannot offer living accommodations. At this time there is no stipend for the residency, but residents may receive activation fees for teaching a class, conducting a workshop, or producing a specific activation during Open Studios at Second Sundays.

Artists are expected to spend at least 30 hours a week at Pioneer Works. Open building hours for staff and residents are 10–8pm Monday–Friday and 12–6pm Saturday and Sunday, with exceptions during special events and rentals.

Selection process
A jury of critics, curators, past resident artists, and Pioneer Works staff will convene in early October to consider candidates for spring and fall sessions. Selected residents will be announced on November 1. Spring residents are slated to begin in March 2019, and fall residents in September 2019.
