Making Places of Belonging, a lecture from Annette M. Kim

Annette M. Kim is Associate Professor of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. She founded and directs SLAB, the Spatial Analysis Laboratory, which advances visualization through spatial ethnography and critical cartography, and discovers inclusive, humane ways to design and govern the 21st-century city. She also co-founded the collective RAP: Race, Arts, and Placemaking. In 2015 she published Sidewalk City: Remapping Public Space in Ho Chi Minh City (University of Chicago Press), a multidisciplinary case study of sidewalks, providing important insights of sidewalk life inclusive of the many publics in a distinctive geographical area.

Kim received a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning and a M.A. in Visual Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, along with a M.P.P. from Harvard University, and a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art and Architecture from Wellesley College.
