“Excerpts: A Bookish Party”

Join us for a night of drinks, snacks (discursive and real), and books to celebrate Columbia Books on Architecture and the City. Past publications and fall 2018 releases will be available including including A House Is Not Just a House by Tatiana Bilbao with additional texts by Amale Andraos, Gabriela Etchegaray, Hilary Sample, and Ivonne Santoyo-Orozco, and The Ordinary by Enrique Walker in conversation with Denise Scott Brown, Rem Koolhaas, and Yoshiharu Tsukamoto.
Model Projections

This exhibition investigates the complex pathways between architecture and its representations through an examination of the practice of model making. Drawing primarily upon the special collections of the Department of Drawings and Archives at Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library, Columbia University, the exhibition focuses on an ecosystem of architectural model making during the mid-twentieth century.
“It’s Simple: Histories of Architecture and/for the Environment”

As a part of the Canadian Centre for Architecture’s ongoing research project “Architecture and/for the Environment”and in conjunction with the Buell Center’s “Power: Infrastructure in America” initiative, this afternoon event will offer new directions and agendas for environmental histories of architecture that combine a planetary perspective with an assertion that national centers of power, particularly those in the United States, continue to hold outsize influence and responsibility. Speakers include: Daniel Barber (‘10 Ph.D. Arch), Aleksandr Bierig, Nerea Calvillo (‘02 MSAAD), Jiat-Hwee Chang, Isabelle Doucet, Hannah le Roux, Kiel Moe, and Paulo Tavares. Response by Kim Förster and Meredith TenHoor. Moderated by Reinhold Martin.
“Unnatural Disaster: Infrastructure in Puerto Rico before, during, and after Hurricane Maria”

Co-organized by Columbia GSAPP Urban Planning, Urban Design, and Historic Preservation Programs, the Center for Spatial Research, and the Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture, in conjunction with the Buell Center’s “Power: Infrastructure in America” research initiative. Participants include Ivis Garcia Zambrana, Marcelo López-Dinardi (’13 MSCCP), Mark Martin Bras, Andrés Mignucci, Frances Negrón-Muntaner, and Ingrid Olivo in conversation with Hiba Bou Akar and Monxo López.
“Acts of Design: New Housing Paradigms in North America”
