Art Paris 2019: a 21st edition that gives pride of place to women artists and Latin America
Bringing together 150 exhibitors from 20 countries, including many major galleries that are taking part for the first time, Art Paris 2019 confirms its position as a leading rallying point for modern and contemporary art every spring. At the same time, the fair continues to assert its own unique personality as an international art fair that supports French and European art from the post-war period to the present day, whilst also promoting the new horizons of international creation.
Two themes give a special character to the 21st edition:
A Gaze at Women Artists in France curated by AWARE: Archives of Women artists, Research and Exhibitions, presents a critical and subjective overview of the work of women artists by means of a selection of 25 female artists from the exhibits of participating galleries. This chronologically organised, themed itinerary divided into four sections (abstraction, the feminist avant-garde, image and theatricality) was so enthusiastically received by numerous galleries that their participation went well beyond the scope of the focus defined by AWARE and, as a result, this edition of the fair showcases the work of more than one hundred women artists.
Southern Stars: An Exploration of Latin American Art, a project led by independent exhibition curator Valentina Locatelli, brings together around 20 European, Asian and Latin American galleries that are showing a total of 60 Argentinean, Brazilian, Chilean, Colombian, Cuban, Mexican, Peruvian and Venezuelan artists. In parallel, other projects such as a video programme, installation artworks, the presentation of a private collection and conferences at the Maison de l’Amérique latine will highlight the creative effervescence that reigns on the continent.
Art Paris is also continuing its mission to unearth new talents thanks to the support it provides to 14 young galleries in the “Promises” sector, which focuses on emerging artists. It also encourages the discovery, or the rediscovery, of modern, contemporary and emerging artists thanks to the “Solo Show” sector, which this year boasts a record-breaking 46 monographic exhibitions.
In 2019, this fair open to all forms of expression is playing host to a new platform: IDEAT Contemporary Lifestyle Platform, which will address the relationship between design and contemporary art.
