One year MA programme; taught by practising curators and academics working at Tate Liverpool and Liverpool Biennial; seminar based; research excursions; 2 year part-time option available.
MA Exhibition Studies is dedicated to the practice, history, and theory of worldwide exhibition cultures and the development of curatorial practice. You will engage with a range of topics that build upon exhibition cultures internationally; from the contemporary biennial to the historical collection. We understand the process of curating as a research-based activity that engages with a range of other disciplines that may diverge from art history. We welcome applications from candidates who are working in a museum or gallery, or those who wish to peruse a career in this field.
Programme structure
The innovative curriculum focuses on exhibition practices and histories; collaborative practice with partner organisations; as well as studio practice, to develop research topics through project-based learning. The dissertation project consists of a written or practical component. We have strong links with MA Curating at Aarhus University in Denmark, where joint activity is coordinated through staff and student exchanges throughout the year.
Exhibition Studies is taught by Dr. Michael Birchall, Curator of Public Practice at Tate Liverpool, and Prof. Joasia Krysa, Head of Research, Liverpool Biennial. The programme is embedded into the cultural life of Liverpool, making it a unique postgraduate experience as both core staff and students benefit from the cultural partnerships, allowing for joint programmes to be delivered such as lectures, symposia, exhibitions, and an engagement with curators and researchers working in the visual arts.
