At the RCA we have an outward looking, dynamic and imaginative research culture.  We place a focus upon the potential of art and design practices to act as catalysts for cultural change, social engagement and economic vitality. We offer MPhil and PhD degrees across the four schools and three research centres in both part-time and full-time modes: School of Architecture / School of Arts & Humanities / School of Communication / School of Design / Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design / Intelligent Mobility Design Centre / Burberry Research Futures Group.

As part of the RCA, our research students join a world-leading art and design institution with a long heritage of excellence and innovation.  We encourage interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary approaches and have a wide range of external and industry partners to offer broader experiences, knowledge and expertise.

Students come to a PhD or MPhil with a project or research question which can be addressed through practice-based research, theoretical research or a combination of both.  Students are supported in their research by a supervisory team, a discipline-specific programme of activities and College-wide doctoral training.  An MPhil or PhD degree at the RCA can be undertaken as an early or mid-career development.  In addition to Higher Education routes, many of our research graduates work within art and design industries where their research skills, understanding and knowledge become important drivers of policy and strategic development.
