Pratt Institute’s Fine Arts Department is delighted to announce the 2019 PROJECT THIRD and Studio Residency Artists:
PROJECT THIRD invited Artist in Residence: Shaun Leonardo
PROJECT THIRD: Residency for Research & Community Engagement: This ten-week summer residency program is geared towards artists/collaborative groups whose community work is research oriented and/or motivated by the desire to instigate social change. PROJECT THIRD consists of 3 linked components: (1) invited artists in residence, (2) six week Fine Arts MFA summer session led by visiting faculty, (3) collaboration with internal and external partners. Invited artists inhabit and transform the gallery into a visible location for research, engagement, and experimentation.
Shaun Leonardo’s performance practice, anchored by his work in Assembly, a diversion program for court-involved youth, is participatory in nature and invested in a process of embodiment, promoting the political potential of attention and discomfort as a means to disrupt meaning and shift perspective. For his PROJECT THIRD residency, Leonardo will partner with students to conduct a Social Practice laboratory, offering an investigation into projects that explore the interpersonal potential of this ever-broadening and messy practice; in various social spaces including the community center, prison, classroom, and living room, while instigating the public vs. private nature of this work. Leonardo is a Brooklyn-based artist from Queens, New York. He received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, is a recipient of support from Creative Capital and Guggenheim Social Practice and was recently profiled in the New York Times. His work has been presented in galleries and institutions, nationally and internationally, and featured at The Guggenheim Museum, the High Line, Recess, and VOLTA NY. Leonardo joined Pratt Institute as the School of Art, Visiting Fellow, in fall 2018.

Studio Residency Program: Pratt Institute’s Fine Arts Department offers summer studio residencies that award accomplished professional artists private studio space on our Brooklyn campus. There are two residencies available. One is for a New York-area artist (studio provided) and one for an artist living and working in the U.S.A. (studio and apartment provided). The two selected artists are in residence alongside a Pratt Fine Arts faculty member and have use of Fine Arts’ East Hall Gallery to exhibit their work.
Katya Grokhovsky was born in Ukraine, raised in Australia and is based in NYC. She is an artist, independent curator, educator and a Founding Artistic Director of The Immigrant Artist Biennial (TIAB) and Feminist Urgent (FU). Grokhovsky holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a BFA from Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne University, Australia and a BA (Honors) in Fashion from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia.
Devin Kenny is an artist, writer, and musician working across several media living in Houston. Born in 1987 and active online since the mid-1990s, he has witnessed the shift from web 1.0 into the so-called social internet of web 2.0 and the present and his work is colored by this transition. He received his MFA in 2013 from the New Genres department at UCLA and is an alumnus of the Whitney Independent Study Program, SOMA Mexico, and is currently a fellow at the MFAH Core Program.
Catherine LeCleire has shown her work nationally and internationally and has received several awards, grants, and residencies. In 2014 she received the “New Works Residency” at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Maine and the Juror’s Award at San Luis Obispo Museum in California. In 2012 she received the Walter Gropius Award at the Huntington Museum of Art in West Virginia and in 2008 the Konrad Award at the Printmaking Center of New Jersey.
