A new and trans-disciplinary approach to the transformation of spaces that we inhabit and experience
Working with students over 15 months, this unique programme focuses on the fertile territories where the discipline of architecture cross-pollinates with the other creative arts, addressing key emerging issues in contemporary culture and exploring the sites where these issues are made manifest.
What is the programme’s focus?
Recent shifts in contemporary culture have produced an increasing overlap of practices, methods and approaches from the worlds of art and architecture. We are interested in supporting new forms of practice that explore this evolving terrain, particularly work that is situated physically and engages with contemporary social, cultural and political conditions.
–Develop a strong understanding of appropriate research methodologies in art and design practice-led research, specifically relating to approaches towards criticality, performativity and textuality
–Make “situated practice” projects that are site-related—from physical installations and events to digital interventions and site-writings
–Identify the polemics of interesting sites, research and develop interventions, and evaluate their success
–Learn in state-of-the-art facilities at Here East, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and have the opportunity to exhibit your work in London before graduation

Who will teach the programme?
Programme Director James O’Leary, Professor Jane Rendell, Henrietta Williams and Dr. David Roberts will deliver the core modules.
Other visiting tutors and academics drawn from The Bartlett’s internationally renowned teaching and research programmes will teach supporting modules, and international practitioners and theorists will lead workshops and contribute to roundtables and talks. Who should apply?
We invite applications from candidates with a passionate interest in new forms of situated practice, innovative forms of research dissemination, and new architectures of exhibition and installation. With a clearly trans-disciplinary ethos, we are looking for applicants from diverse backgrounds and previous experiences in the fields of art, architecture, curatorship, public engagement, event design, creative regeneration, participation design, performance, ethnography, activism, writing, filmmaking, information design and publishing.
