In connection with the establishment of the new Munch Museum, Oslo, funds have been reserved through the Oslo Municipality Art Programme for a specially commissioned work of art in the famous Oslo harbour.
Seven internationally and nationally renowned artists have been selected for a high profile competition to make a proposal for a permanent, site-specific sculpture for the Museum Island.
The artists are: AK Dolven, Olafur Eliasson, Tracey Emin, Matias Faldbakken, Cristina Iglesias, Ragnar Kjartansson and Adrián Villar Rojas.
The new Munch Museum, now under construction in the Oslo harbour, is designed by the Spanish architecture firm Estudio Herreros, and scheduled to open in June 2020.
The new commission will be situated at the Museum Island, to be established on the south side of the new Munch museum, at the historical mouth of the Akerselva river. The commission is scheduled to be completed in time for the opening of the Museum building.
Curators for the commission are Andrea Schlieker, Director of Commissions and Special Projects at White Cube, London, and Jon-Ove Steihaug, director of exhibitions and collections at the Munch Museum, Oslo. Further, the jury consists of representatives of Estudio Herreros (lead architect) and LPO architects (local architect), the construction team of the Island, the curators, as well as representatives of the Munch Museum.
The Museum Island will be a part of the Harbour Promenade and will be accessible for the inhabitants of Oslo as well as the visitors to the museum and the Oslo Harbour area.
The Island will be built for recreation as an approximately 1000 sqm area, connected to the new museum by a 30m long bridge.
The jury will make its selection by the end of September 2018.
