The Postgraduate Programme in Curating (CAS/MAS Curating) is an international, English speaking, postgraduate part-time programme founded in 2005. It is conceived of as a discursive platform which imparts key areas of contemporary exhibition-making, knowledge production and curating by praxis-oriented project work. We understand curating as an activity and as an agency, as an interdisciplinary work process.

–Critical reading, discussing and an excessive network; our alumni are working worldwide. Since 2017 we offer distance learning opportunities.
–With instruction modules, group activities, seminars and lectures held by an international selection of guest lecturers from various fields.

The Programme focuses less on the “genius concept” of the exhibition planner as individual author—a highly controversial topic since the 1990s—than on cooperative, interdisciplinary working methods, as employed, for example, in film productions or non-government organizations. Exhibition-making / knowledge production/curating means the creation of innovative structures for the presentation of cultural artefacts, discourse and knowledge through interdisciplinary collaboration. In this field art, digital media, design, and architecture intermesh in new ways.
 

Modules:
All modules are based on notions of politics of display, politics of sites, politics of transfer and translation, and politics of knowledge production.

(10) MAS Project with Thesis / or PhD proposal

The modules can be studied alongside work. The seminar sessions usually take place Friday and Saturday. This offers the opportunity to continue an occupational activity or internship and follow one’s own projects parallel to the study programme.

Duration
CAS: Two semesters (200 contact hours and approximately 200 hours of independent study)
MAS: Four semesters (600 contact hours and approximately 200 hours of independent study)

Certificates
CAS: Certificate of Advanced Studies in Curating: 23.5 ECTS
MAS: Master of Advanced Studies in Curating ZFH: 65 ECTS
Each year one additional workshop: 7.5 ECTS
MAS with two workshops: 90 ECTS

Course language
Due to growing international demand, the CAS and MAS are offered in English. Candidates may submit seminar papers in either German or English.
Please note: English language skills are required, no German is required, papers can be written either in German or in English.

Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings (10 hours per week)

Project supervision
Project work requires a certain amount of flexibility
