The Kirchner Museum Davos is hosting an interdisciplinary conference about the life and work of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner from June 28 to July 1, 2018 at Sunstar Alpine Hotel Davos, Switzerland.
Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the artist’s death, the conference considers key issues raised by the latest research. Workshops and a supporting program will explore these topics further, adopting a broad approach to appeal to a wide audience.
The conference features lectures by internationally acclaimed experts including Sherwin Simmons (University of Oregon), Christian Weikop (University of Edinburgh), and Jill Lloyd (writer and curator) as well as panel discussions with Karin Leonhard (University of Constance), Beatrice von Bormann (Stedeljik Museum Amsterdam), Dorthe Aagesen (SMK National Gallery of Denmark), Thorsten Sadowsky (Kirchner Museum Davos), Rein Wolfs (Bundeskunsthalle Bonn), and others.
Covering topics such as “Self-promotion and the Artist,” “Illness and Anxiety,” “Constructions of Identity,” “Portraits of Women / Portraits of Men / Portraits of Children,” and “Kirchner and Literature,” the conference will open a new chapter in our understanding of the artist.
We hope that Rethinking Kirchner will spark your interest and would be pleased to welcome you in Davos this June.
Conference registration is open until April 30, 2018.
The deadline for submitting papers on one of the conference topics is May 2, 2018. We encourage scholars from different disciplines to contribute.
The conference languages are English and German with simultaneous interpretation provided. Following the conference, a publication will document its results.
The conference is co-organized by Art Centre Basel in collaboration with the University of Constance.
