Final call for applications: Critical and Curatorial Studies of Contemporary Art

MA in Critical and Curatorial Studies in Contemporary Arts (CCSCA) is a two-year, intensive, taught-in-English international program, emphasizing both art criticism and curatorial studies, while providing students an opportunity to become familiar with discourses in contemporary art from various vantage points of the globe, especially Asia Pacific. Applications are now open for fall 2018. The deadline for applications is April 30, 2018.

Launched in 2016 at National Taipei University of Education, CCSCA is one of very few programs of its kind, focusing on curatorial studies not only in Taiwan but also in Asia. With Taiwan’s important geographical location in East Asia, CCSCA can be an excellent cultural exchange center between Northeast and Southeast Asia, as well as between the Mainland and the Pacific Ocean. The term “critical” in the program title not only stands for “art criticism” but also refers to the critical thinking and the socio-political consciousness in large via curating.

The five modules in this course: art history, art criticism, exhibition curating, museum studies and creative industry are designed to give students a comprehensive, integrated understanding of contemporary art. In addition to the main courses, CCSCA hosts series of lectures, workshops, international exchanges and oversea study trip.

This year, CCSCA features two visiting professors and also a collaboration with the Spring Foundation and Taipei MOCA for the “Curating History/ Histories of Curating in Asia, Part 2”  lecture series in June, organized by CCSCA program leader LU Pei-Yi. The invited speakers are Mami Kataoka (chief curator of Mori Museum, Ute Meta Bauer (Founding Director of NTU CCA Singapore), Anthony Gardner (the author of Biennials, Triennials, and Documenta: The Exhibitions that Created Contemporary Art), Sophie McIntyre (the author of Imagining Taiwan: The Role of Art in Taiwan’s Quest for Identity). This series explores the relationships and possibilities for contemporary curatorial practice and history within the limitations of archives and an  ever shifting Asia. Through this collaboration, CCSCA strengthens its mission of shedding a new light on curating within the Asia Pacific region and beyond.

(2) An autobiography or a personal statement (no more than two A4 pages)
(3) Study plan
(4) Other documents that may facilitate the review
(5) English proficiency test score (applied to students whose first language is not English)
