From May 12 to September 2, 2018, David Chipperfield Architects Works 2018 will display a selection of 16 current and recent projects at various stages of their development, illustrating the range of activities that take place in an architecture studio today. The material exhibited at Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza will vary from rough sketches and models relating to the beginning of the design process, to detail design and construction drawings at the end of the design process, and will include photographs and films of recently completed projects.

“This exhibition represents our attempt to show how we work, how we develop ideas, how we work in parallel in different projects, cultures, and with different resources, priorities and collaborators, balancing local and global perspectives. As a practice, we have strived to maintain a studio mentality despite the scale of the overall studio, and despite the diversity and range of our projects.” –David Chipperfield

In an age dominated by images, the identity of David Chipperfield Architects can be difficult to define as it is rooted in a particular attitude to design and teamwork, rather than a fixed style. Revealing the processes of designing and creating architecture is therefore crucial to understanding the values that unify an international body of work.

The City of Vicenza, in collaboration with the cultural association Abacoarchitettura, has invited David Chipperfield Architects to create an exhibition at the Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza. The exhibition marks the return of contemporary architecture exhibitions to the grand hall which was closed for extensive restoration 12 years ago, and emphasizes the important role that architectural culture plays in the history and identity of the city.

David Chipperfield Architects Works 2018 aims to provide an insight into the process, where the architectural potential of a project can be found. It will display a wide range of projects at varying stages in their development, demonstrating the collaborative and team-based nature of a practice that involves and connects four offices in four countries.

The presentation for each project has been developed by the respective design teams in the London, Berlin, Milan and Shanghai offices, so demonstrating the desire to address cultural, professional and intellectual challenges. The installation itself will consist of a wide central space running the length of the hall, flanked on both sides by smaller exhibition rooms. These rooms will display current projects described and illustrated in a manner appropriate to the project and emphasizing the ideas behind it. While the rooms place emphasis on active work, the central open zone will provide the setting for an introductory overview of key buildings completed since the practice was founded in 1985: these projects, which now represent the established body of work, will be presented concentrating on the formal ideas rather than circumstantial conditions.

Current and recent projects include: Cemetery chapel and visitor centre, Inagawa; Royal Academy of Arts masterplan, London; Neue Nationalgalerie refurbishment, Berlin; Valentino store concept; Hoxton Press residential development, London; Museum of Natural History, Zheijiang; James Simon Galerie, Berlin; Amorepacific Headquarters, Seoul; West Bund Art Museum, Shanghai; Kunsthaus Zürich, Zurich; Music Venue, Edinburgh; Lah Contemporary, Bled; Private house, Zurich; Cavea Arcari performance space, Zovencedo; Procuratie Vecchie on Piazza San Marco, Venice; Fundacion RIA research project, Galicia.
