Let me hear you say “Yeah”!
2 UNLIMITED is an exhibition in and about Amsterdam
It features people, objects, and ideas currently residing in the city
It considers homegrown artistic practices as critical and analytical tools
And the poetics and imaginaries of this space and time
2 UNLIMITED is set in the current age of ultra-development and mass tourism
But instead of decrying:
No no, no no no no, no no no no, no no there’s no limit!
It foregrounds the work of new artistic communities that are grounded in Amsterdam’s everyday reality
And its potential transformation
2 UNLIMITED gathers artists and critical thinkers
To present new possibilities for communication, language, communality, design
To break down exclusionary narratives and falsified myth-making
To not look back, only look forward
To dare imagine different futures
To rip it up and start again
To not give up the fight
Let me hear you say “Yeah”!
2 UNLIMITED is an exhibition and programme about artistic life in Amsterdam today. Extending over the summer of 2018, and featuring multiple multidisciplinary events, this edition presents a wide range of artistic practices, including performance, sculpture, exhibition design, sound, artistic research, writing, and more. The artists in this project comprise a wide range of backgrounds, concerns, and aesthetic sensibilities, but are joined here by a sense of productive criticality.
2 UNLIMITED is Cecilia Bengtsson, Em’Kal Eyongakpa, Amelia Groom, Zhana Ivanova, Ja Ja Ja Nee Nee Nee, Remy Jungerman, Patricia Kaersenhout, Aimée Zito Lema, Antonis Pittas, Werker Collective, and many more.
The publication A 2 UNLIMITED Reader expands on a few of the propositions and preoccupations in the exhibition and programme. It features contributions by Cecilia & Jeffrey Babcock, Amelia Groom, Falke Pisano, Radna Rumping, Nolwenn Salaün, Mounira Al Solh, and will be available free of charge at De Appel throughout the exhibition period.
2 UNLIMITED is curated by Rachael Rakes and Niels Van Tomme.
Opening events
Wednesday, May 30, 6–10pm
The opening event for 2 UNLIMITED will unfold in three parts, including the vocal activation of Cecilia Bengtsson’s Pendulum, a roundtable discussion with representatives from several of Amsterdam’s artistic communities, and music by Jeroen Vermandere.
Saturday, June 2, 3pm
Rehearsal 1 by Zhana Ivanova
In Rehearsal 1, text, film, voiceover, and live performance are alternately present, permanently interconnected and in continuous interplay. The result is a performative constellation, exposing shifting power structures and the effect of each medium on the experience of time, language, truth, and response.
More details of the public programme, featuring Em’Kal Eyongakpa, Experimental Jetset, Ja Ja Ja Nee Nee Nee, Willem de Ridder, Rietlanden Women’s Office and Werker Collective will be announced soon at www.deappel.nl.
2 UNLIMITED features a Footnotes presentation by Willem de Ridder and commissioned visual identities by Johanna Ehde, Sam de Groot, Özgür Kar & Sabo Day, Maria Pask.
The project is sponsored by Mondriaan Fund, Amsterdam Fund for the Arts (AFK), Oedipus and Kesbeke.
