‘The artist should paint not only what he sees before him but also what he sees within him. If however he sees nothing within him, then he should also omit to paint that which he sees before him’

Caspar David Friedrich

VICTORIA MORTON’S second solo show at THE MODERN INSTITUTE will consist of new paintings and photography. Created in Italy where MORTON has recently set up studio, these works continue to develop a language of figurative abstract expressionism and further extend her spatial investigations and her concerns with recognising the viewer as the protagonist. Artists from BELLINI to CAPTAIN BEEFHEART inform her vivid canvases which marry a bold flamboyance with a delicate luminosity.

A catalogue documenting the FALL (2004) exhibition at BONNER KUNSTVEREIN will be available at THE MODERN INSTITUTE. Published by REVOLVER, edited by CHRISTINA VEGH. 64pp, 30 colour illustrations, hardback.

MORTON was born in 1971 and studied painting at GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART, which she followed with an MA before graduating in 1995. Whilst continuing to live and work in Glasgow, she has recently set up a studio in Italy where she has been creating new work. MORTON has had solos shows in Britain, Europe and the United States. Most recently, she received a solo show at SADIE COLES HQ, London. Her work was included in a group show, EDGE OF THE REAL at the WHITECHAPEL GALLERY, London (2004) and in 2003 she took part in PAINTING NOT PAINTING with JIM LAMBIE, JULIE ROBERTS and RICHARD SLEE at TATE ST. IVES.

As well as exhibiting her work, MORTON has made collaborative work as a member of ELIZABETH GO with fellow artists HAYLEY TOMPKINS, SUE TOMPKINS, SARAH TRIPP and CATHY WILKES as well as performing as a member of the band, SUCKLE. Between 1996 and 2001, MORTON was a lecturer at DUNCAN AND JORDANSTONE COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN, Dundee.
