Folkert DE JONG: Golden Dawn
October 29 – December 17, 2005
Peres Projects is very pleased to present the first US solo exhibition of Dutch artists Folkert De Jong entitled “Golden Dawn.” De Jong will present a new series of sculptures. The exhibition will open from 6 to 9 pm on October 29th, and end on December 17th, 2005.
For his US solo debut, De Jong will present a new sculptural installation of life sized figurative polyurethane foam, rubber, and paint sculptures. For the past 4years, De Jong’s sculptural practice has addressed his interest in the fascination we have for obsessions and his response to what motives the characters, which he often makes up, that populate his world of religious zealots, military generals and their followers, politicians, historical figures and sometimes just the passive bystanders. The works in “Golden Dawn” continue this exploration with sculptures that are on one hand monumental in scale, yet made of fragile and vernacular materials.
Folkert De Jong (b. 1972, lives/works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands) received his degree in art from the Rijksakademie van beelbende in 2000. He is the receipient of the 2003 Prix De Rome for sculpture Recent exhibitions: “Medusa’s First Move: The Council”, Chisenhale Gallery, London, UK; “Shoot the Freak”, Museum het Domein, Sittard, The Netherlands; and, “The Zine UnBound: Kults, Werewolves and Sarcastic Hippies”, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco.
