Javier Peres is very pleased to present a performance by California art-rock collective My Barbarian, at Peres Projects Berlin on Saturday, July 22, 2006 at 10:00pm.
My Barbarian will present a musical-theatrical performance piece, “Medieval Morality,” an original adaptation of the Everyman saga, in which a lowly artist is teased and tempted by the Devil while being dominated by a Valkyrie-like sadist-angel. A collapsed conflation of psychedelic harmonies, folk art satires and fantastical hand-made costumes, My Barbarian’s “Medieval Morality” confronts the power dynamics of the art world with humor, intelligence and extroverted energy. My Barbarian first presented the piece at the Mak Center Schindler House in Los Angeles in 2004, and has adapted the play for Berlin with the assistance of Berlin-based artist Jan Hammer, who will also participate in the performance.
My Barbarian is a collaborative group working in music, theater, performance art and video. Founded in 2000 by Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, and Alex Segade, My Barbarian has created site-specific spectacles for clubs, cabarets, galleries, museums, theaters and public spaces. My Barbarian recently performed “Double Future,” a program of two theatrical works, for a sold out run at REDCAT in Los Angeles. Notable recent projects include: “You Were Born Poor & Poor You Will Die,” a rock opera about class warfare, premiered at the PERFORMA 05 Biennial in New York; “Silver Minds,” an environmentalist Noh play performed in the snow, commissioned by the Aspen Art Museum in 2006; “Gods of Canada,” a super-heroic paean to Canadian liberalism commissioned in 2005 by the Power Plant in Toronto, Ontario, later included as an installation in “Making the Band” (2006), at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, NY; “Pagan Rights,” a quirky California dreamscape celebrating opposition to the Christian Right performed in 2005 at the Evidence Room Theater and UCLA Hammer Museum in LA, Participant, Inc. in New York and the Drake Hotel in Toronto; “Squirrel Radio Action,” a public radio send-up commissioned in 2005 by Pacific Drift on NPR affiliate KPCC; “Medieval Morality,” a site-specific play at the MAK Center Schindler House in 2004; “MB: The Mary Blair Story,” 2004 NOW Festival, REDCAT, LA. My Barbarian’s music video Unicorns LA is a cult favorite with a life of its own on the Internet. My Barbarian will be included in the California Biennial 2006 at the Orange County Museum of Art and the 2007 Montréal Biennale. Summer 2006 projects include participation in “This is Not Gay Art Now” curated by Jack Pierson at Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, “End of Gays,” curated by José Muñoz for Outfest LA, and a performance at Torpedo in Oslo, Norway. Their first album, “Cloven Soft-Shoe,” was released in 2005 and the group is currently recording their second album, “Pagan Rights.”
