Maison Martin Margiela Artisanal Collection at Galleria Carla Sozzani
From February 11th to March 4th 2007, for the first time ever in Italy, Galleria Carla Sozzani will host a selection of pieces from the Maison Martin Margiela Artisanal Collection. The selection will include the most emotionally and creatively important pieces the Maison has created over the years to the present day.
Since its beginnings in 1989, Maison Martin Margiela has accompanied its prêt-à-porter collection with garments, accessories and objects defined by the name “Artisanal”. The Maison’s creative inspiration is born from a poetic conception of imperfections: “our most important source of inspiration has always been the extremes and the changes of every day life”.
The research of used and new materials across the globe, and the belief that these garments and objects may be given a second life, while respecting and maintaining the traces of the passage of time and use, remains one of the keystones of the Maison’s creative expression.
Each garment is reworked entirely by hand at the Maison’s atelier in Paris. The complexity and specificity of each step of such a creative process of transformation naturally limits the quantity of garments produced, while the individuality of the materials used to create each garment ensures its exclusivity.
The label, numbered 0 for women and 0/10 for men is either sewn in, embossed or stamped depending on the material used to create the garment or accessory.
Maison Martin Margiela
Martin Margiela was born in Belgium, and is a graduate of the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
The Maison Martin Margiela was founded in 1988, and in October 1988 presented its first prêt-à-porter collection for spring/summer 1989. This collection carries a completely white rectangular label attached by four stitches apparent on the exterior of unlined garments.
Line 10, the first men collection of the house, was created ten years later (1999).
In 1994 the Maison launched its first “AIDS T-shirt”. Since then, the T-shirt is proposed each season in a different colour. Part of the profits are donated to benefit a research foundation against the AIDS virus.
The other Maison’s lines are: 4 and 14, respectively wardrobes for women and men; 11, a collection of accessories and 22 a collection of shoes, both for women and men; MM6, a less design driven collection for woman.
Today, there are eleven Maison Martin Margiela shops around the world.
The use of white, with all its different shades, tones and texture, as universal colour and the decorative signature have always characterized the Maison Martin Margiela.
