As regards my work, generating image-icons can be more profoundly understood under the aspects of film or arrangement of set designs than the regime of art theory or even avant-garde, boundary-breaking logic. Whether it is art, cult or trash depends on the eye of the beholder. What remains is the thrill of challenging the overpowering might of images and the resurgence of image monopolies with one’s own regime of signs. It’s a question of handling the inundating visual media of the present – animation films, comix, children’s book illustrations, graphic design, video games, street and character art, logos, icons, mangas – which I counter with my own syntax of signs. These signs present themselves as visual statements, have therefore more of visuals about them than painting per se. Their comic-type associations play with the sequential narrative style of picture stories, thus mixing – quite deliberately and without valuation – the trash of porncomix with the tradition of portrait painting, the gentle innocence of children’s book illustrations with the aesthetics of advertising logos.
