As the West Coast’s oldest and largest auctioneer, Bonhams and
Butterfields has long been considered the preeminent source for
California works of art. We inaugurated our Made in California sale
last May with considerable success. Our second sale continues that
success in terms of quality and variety. The sale includes important
works by a number of groundbreaking California artists. The sale
features a large public sculpture by Claire Falkenstein; a seminal
minimal work by Judy Chicago from the collection of prominent local
curator Dextra Frankel; a haunting self portrait by Elmer Bischoff; two
Jim Shaw works recently exhibited in the UCLA Hammer Museum’s Eden’s
Edge exhibition curated by Gary Garrels; and an erotically charged
canvas by Lari Pittman. Works by Joan Brown, Lee Mullican, Manuel
Neri, Ken Price, and Wallace Berman, among many others, are also
included.
Our fall selection of Modern, Contemporary and Latin American Art is one
of our strongest yet. It represents our unwavering commitment to these
works. We are especially pleased to offer a small but important and
powerful drawing by Pablo Picasso from 1938 which includes many elements
of some of his best known paintings from the same period along with a
1964 Andy Warhol “American Man” canvas, a well known portrait of Watson
Powell that comes directly from Mr. Powell’s estate. Strong works by
Maurice de Vlaminck, August Rodin, and Paul Signac are offered along
with more recent examples by cutting edge artists, like Tim Gardner, Tom
of Finland and Jenny Holzer.
Given the current level of interest in this emerging market, we are
delighted to offer a small but dynamic group of works by leading Chinese
contemporary artists Li Shan, Su Xingping, Chuang Che, and Sun Liang. A
Latin American section features important works by Miguel Covarrubias,
Francisco Toledo, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Francisco Zúñiga.
Both sales include a selection of conceptual works from the estate of
Los Angeles art pioneers Eugenia and James Butler. Among the works to
be sold in this section are pieces by James Lee Byars, Edward Kienholz,
Llyn Foulkes, Victor Vasarely, and Dieter Roth.
