Art Basel Miami Beach
From December 6 through 9, Miami Beach, Florida, USA, will be home to the leading international art show of the Americas. 200 of the most prestigious galleries from the USA, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa will be taking part. Chosen by the Selection Committee from a record number of over 850 applicants, they will present works by over 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. 27 new galleries will be enhancing all sectors, making the roster of participants at this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach more illustrious than ever. The special “Art Nova” sector comprises 58 booths presenting new works by 200 artists. An exciting array of special exhibitions, visits to private art collections, and crossover events will round out the varied program awaiting visitors to Art Basel Miami Beach.
New: “Art Supernova”
Art Basel Miami Beach is introducing a new sector this year: “Art Supernova.” It features 20 galleries from Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, and the United States presenting new works by both emerging and renowned artists in an experimental group show. For the full list, see http://www.artbaselmiamibeach.com/go/id/gdg/ .The concept offers an alternative form of gallery presentation in an art fair context. “Art Supernova” takes a collaborative approach that links the participating galleries in a new way. Instead of each gallery having its own separate booth, the exhibitors in “Art Supernova” have interconnected exhibition spaces, a common storage area, and shared facilities for presenting works on paper, videos, performances, artist files, books, and catalogs. Austrian artist Peter Kogler is creating a new work specifically for the sector: his digital montage of various motifs and interlinked loops will be laid out in the passage leading to “Art Supernova,” which will be located in a separate space adjacent to the exhibition halls at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
“Art Kabinett”
This year’s “Art Kabinett” gives 22 participating galleries from eight countries the opportunity to present small curated exhibitions. The exhibition concepts for “Art Kabinett” are diverse, representing everything from thematic group exhibitions and one-person shows (Chris Burden, Louis Soutter, Matt Mullican, Robert Indiana) to installations. The spectrum ranges from modern masters to established artists and the youngest generation. “Art Kabinett” is an additional attraction for visitors and enables galleries to complement the arrangement of their booths with a curated exhibition. In undertaking this initiative, Art Basel intensifies its efforts to achieve a meaningful combination of commercial and cultural exhibition activity.
“Art Positions”: New — Concrete Waves: An Homage to Skate Culture.
20 young galleries will be provided with shipping containers where they can show projects by their up-and-coming artists. The participating galleries are from Brazil, China, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Norway, Poland, and the USA. In cooperation with Art Radio WPS1.org, Art Basel Miami Beach will also be presenting a series of public programs revolving around the theme “Concrete Waves: An Homage to Skate Culture.” The projects include DJ and skate performances, live radio broadcasts, an installation by American artist Ryan McGinness, and a film program (curated by Eli Sudbrack of assume vivid astro focus).
“Art Perform”
“Art Perform” (curator Jens Hoffmann, Director of the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts in San Francisco) features daily performances by artists such as Roman Ondak (Slovakia), Marepe (Brazil), Donald Urquhart (UK), Laura Lima (Brazil), Olivia Plender (UK), and Shana Lutker (USA). “Art Projects”
The 2007 edition of “Art Projects” features nine projects by internationally renowned artists. On show in public spaces in Miami Beach, these works engage directly with the spectator, interrupting the daily routine of passers-by in poetic, alienating, or surprising ways. With its array of purchasable works by such artists as Haluk Akakce, Alberto Baraya, Rodney Dickson, Jeppe Hein, Claude Leveque, Ryan McGinness, Susan Philipsz, Bjorn Dahlem, and Jaume Plensa, “Art Projects” offers fascinating insight into leading contemporary artists’ interpretation of new art in public spaces.
“Art Basel Conversations”
The “Art Basel Conversations” forum promises to be very exciting this year. Panelists include such renowned artists, collectors, curators, and critics as Richard Flood, Francesca von Habsburg, Patrizia Re Rebaudengo, Maya Hoffmann, Shilpa Gupta, Peter Nagy, Anupam Poddar, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Marina Abramovic, Valie Export, Daniel Birnbaum, Sharon Lockhart, Marisa Merz, Liam Gillick, Dave Hickey, and Raphael Rubinstein, to name only a few. They will be discussing questions based around the subjects of “The Museum of the Future in India,” “Collectors as Producers,” “Women in Art,” and “Criticizing Art Criticism.”
“Art Salon”
“Art Salon” is an open platform for discussion with an emphasis on current themes in contemporary art. Informal in its format but international in scope, “Art Salon” encourages experimental round-table discussions with an array of speakers ranging from artists and curators to authors and writers. It also features book launches, artist talks, and lectures. “Art Salon” will be running its daily program in the Art Guest Lounge. Participants include prominent art personalities such as Marina Abramovic, Josh Baer, Carsten Holler, Cao Fei, Sergei Bugaev Afrika, Joan Jonas, Haluk Akakce, Dara Friedman, Chrissie Iles, and Gary Hill.
“Art Loves…”
Art Basel Miami Beach incorporates crossover events including film (honoring musician and artist Lou Reed and presenting Julian Schnabel’s new film ‘Berlin’), architecture (an evening honoring Herzog & de Meuron Architects, winner of the Pritzker Prize 2001: a conversation between architect Jacques Herzog and artist Doug Aitken, moderated by Terry Riley, Director of the Miami Art Museum), and music. The opening night of “Art Positions” (December 5) features a free concert by the godfathers of punk rock, Iggy Pop and The Stooges.
“Art Video Lounge”
American curator Michael Darling has been entrusted with planning this year’s “Art Video Lounge.” He has put together a program of video pieces by 16 artists who live, or have spent an extended period, in the Pacific Northwest, entitling it “Thermostat: Video and the Pacific Northwest.” Three special programs involving the participating artists, among them Gary Hill, will also be shown: “Return of the Wild West,” “Miranda July (Portland) Sampler,” and “Storytelling.”
“Art Sound Lounge”
“Art Sound Lounge” at Art Basel Miami Beach offers visitors the opportunity to take in music and audio pieces in the attractive surroundings of the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Listeners are provided with a personal listening system to use as they stroll through the gardens. In association with the Concrete Waves project at “Art Positions,” David Weinstein of Art Radio WPS1.org provides a glimpse of the turntable as musical instrument and its influential role in sparking creative innovation in music, from the streets of the Bronx to the ateliers of the avant-garde.
The Art Basel Miami Beach program also features tours of Miami’s private collections, which will be presenting new exhibitions and acquisitions, and visits to artists’ studios. The museums of South Florida, too, will be staging important exhibitions to coincide with the show, among them: “Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller: The Killing Machine and Other Stories presented by MAC @ MAM,” “Enrique Martinez Celaya,” and “Herzog & de Meuron” (the architects of the new MAM) at the Miami Art Museum (MAM); the first major US museum show for Jorge Pardo and the first solo US museum show for Enoc Perez at the Museum of Contemporary Art, N. Miami (MOCA); “French Kissin’ in the U.S.A., a group show of emerging artists from France” and “Faces, a site-specific project by Carlos Amorales” at The Moore Space; “Lichtenstein Sculptures at Fairchild” at Fairchild Tropical Garden, Coral Gables; “Fortunate Objects: Selections from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection” at the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO); “Sculpture: Selections from the Collection of Martin Z. Margulies,” including Caro, de Kooning, Heizer, Judd, Flavin, LeWitt, Lichtenstein, Miro, Noguchi, Oldenburg, Perlman, Segal, Serra, Smith, Snelson, Tucker, and Warhol, at The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse; “Pip Brant: The Flying Carpet and other Re-useables” at The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, Florida International University, Miami; solo exhibitions by Hernan Bas and John Stezaker, and “Euro-Centric, Part 1: New European Art from the Rubell Family Collection” at the Rubell Family Collection; and “Agitated Images: John Heartfield and German Photomontage, 1920-1938″ and “Fashioning the French Interior: Pochoir Portfolios in the 1920s” at the Wolfsonian-FIU. This year also sees the third edition of the Design Miami fair, featuring leading design galleries from around the globe.
