We are pleased to announce that the artist Sterling Ruby is now represented by Xavier Hufkens.

The gallery will show his work for the first time at Art Brussels, Hall1, Booth C3, from 24 to 27 April 2009 and at Art Basel, Hall 2, Booth E3 from 10 to 14 June 2009. A solo exhibition at Xavier Hufkens, Sterling Ruby & Robert Mapplethorpe curated by Sterling Ruby, is scheduled for autumn 2009.

Sterling Ruby has attracted the attention of the international art world with the breadth and depth of his diverse artistic practice. His artistic outpouring includes richly glazed biomorphic ceramics, large scale spray painted canvases, hypnotic videos, poured urethane sculptures, inscribed Formica monoliths, nail polish drawings, and genre bending collages.

As subject matter, Ruby seeks out individual transgressive bodies (body builders, transgenders, gang members), and systems, which often restrict this individuality (maximum security prisons, minimalism, architecture, existentialism). This investigation exposes the complicity of modern art regarding the conditioning of the individual in society. His work confronts this conditioning by bringing a visceral expressionism to modernist forms and structures. Flowing throughout his practice are the narratives of transformation, mimicry, and assimilation, which convey the uncertain spirit of the times.

Sterling Ruby (American) was born in 1972 and lives and works in Los Angeles, California. He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California (2005) and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2001). In 2008 he held the solo exhibitions Supermax 2008, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and CHRON, Drawing Center, New York. His recent group exhibitions include Dirt on Delight, Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2009), the Moscow Biennial (2007), the California Biennial (2006) and Red Eye: LA Artists in the Rubell Family Collection, Miami (2006).
