The Grand Botero Collection New Acquisitions at Gary Nader fine art
July 1st – August 31st, 2009

Gary Nader fine art proudly announces a new acquisition of Fernando Botero masterpieces to its already vast selection of paintings, sculpture and drawings from the international well-acclaimed Colombian Master.

These newest acquisitions to the prominent Botero gallery collection provides a very unique opportunity for collectors and art lovers to experience a comprehensive museum quality inventory showcasing high-end artworks, emphasizing through a curatorial assortment, the different moments of the artist’s carrier and his development from the early 50′s to his newest circus subject matter works.

Botero, born in 1932 in Medellin, Colombia, is regarded as one of the world’s greatest artists. After completing his studies in art in Madrid, Florence and Mexico, Botero quickly rose through the ranks of international artists with exhibitions spanning the globe, the first in Bogota in 1951. In 1992, Botero became the first non-French artist to exhibit on Paris’ famed Champs-Elysees, a career highlight. Needless to say, Botero’s work is represented in all the major international museum collections.

The range and richness of Botero’s aesthetic discourse is portrayed in this exhibition by the variety of pieces including his nowadays rotund iconic figures and the constricted spaces surrounding them, which go far beyond the simple representation of social archetypes. His work is mostly a social and political commentary of his time. The priest, the mother, the father, the child, the symbols of military and political powers, the prostitute, the animals, they all conform a satiric universe of alliances and contradictions, they all portray on the eyes of the artist what we are as individuals, as well as society.

Fernando Botero’s approach to portrait goes from a formal and almost academic representation, as seen in ‘A Family’, 1970, to a documentary demonstration of social personages, ‘Rosalba’, 1969; or a picturesque commentary about his vivid personal experiences, ‘Circus Woman with dog’, 2008 .

Botero’s aesthetic thinking, sense of scale and peculiar style of inflated volumes is readily observed on ‘Sandía’, oil on canvas from 1998, where voluptuous, corpulent figures with exaggerated proportions are the vibrant focal point of the pictorial composition.

Botero’s sculptures, like his paintings, are characterized by their elegant and highly-stylized forms and are known and appreciated throughout the world. In doing so, he manages to capture a sense of scale, humanity, sensuality and humor in his work.

The Botero’s statues, made of bronze, consist mainly of animals, dancers, reclining women, and mythological subjects such as ‘Male Torso’ from 1992 included in this show. The ‘Male Torso’ has graced some of the most prestigious boulevards from the Champs-Elysees in Paris to Park Avenue in New York. Furthermore, several of the pieces conforming the exhibition have been shown in the main streets , town squares and parks of mayor cities worldwide: Paris, Madrid, New York, Washington D.C, Moscow, Lisbon, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Florence, Venice, The Hague, and most recently, Tokyo and Singapore ,to name a few.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gary Nader fine art hours of operation are: Monday through Saturday, between the hours of 10am and 6pm. For more information please contact us at 305.576.0256 or visit us at http://www.garynader.com
