ShContemporary, Asia’s most dynamic contemporary art fair, launches its third edition on September 9, 2009 with an experimental flair that mirrors China’s dynamic future. ShContemporary is adopting an uncompromising approach to exhibition making with the new section Discoveries, and is engaging a whole new generation of collectors with a visionary initiative that aims straight at the heart of Asia’s vast commercial potential: Asia Pacific Collector Development Programme.
The Artistic Initiative
The Discoveries section is a curated exhibition and forum of lectures with the theme “Discovering Contemporary“. A team of three curators have created an exhibition that explores the question “what is contemporary art?” 23 artists from all around the world, from the most established to the just emerging, have been selected to present different responses to this fundamental question. The exhibition will be presented open plan in a spectacular Soviet styled exhibition hall at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
Artists in this exhibition include: Anri SALA, FENG Mengbo, Fiona TAN, SINJI Ohmaki, LIU Wei, Joseph KOSUTH, XU Zhen, Marina ABRAMOVIC, Heman CHONG, Nedko SOLAKOV, Aiko MIYANAGA, Susan NORRIE, and many others.
Participating galleries include: Marian Goodman, ShanghART, Sean Kelly, Mizuma Art, Christian Nagel, Long March Space, Giorgio Persano, Vitamin Creative Space, Galleria Continua, and others.
The Commercial Initiative
The Asia Pacific Collectors Development Programme (CDP) is a response to the enormous potential of the market in China. In the past year, China has overtaken both Britain and Germany to become the third largest economy in the world, and now has the world’s fourth largest number of dollar millionaires. Most art market professionals recognize the huge potential of the Chinese art market but do not know how to engage with it.
ShContemporary’s special programme actively reaches out to potential and emerging collectors by working in partnership with those who have direct access with this sector of China’s growing economy. CDP is an all year round platform to engage with new collectors in the region, with 15 events organized in the first three months alone.
The first partners with CDP are: Central Academy of Fine Art (China’s most prestigious art school), Artron.net (largest China art market resource), and UACC (a company working with private banks on a series of art banking initiatives), with many more partners coming soon.
