Presentation of the FRAC collection in the Franche-Comté region
Supported by the Franche-Comté region, the town of Besançon will soon boast a major new cultural centre called “La Cité des Arts et de la Culture” in 2012. Designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, this ambitious complex will be home to the Franche-Comté Regional Contemporary Art Fund (FRAC), which will benefit from a considerable amount of space to exhibit and store its collection.
Pending its new premises, the Franche-Comté FRAC had set its sights on exhibiting its entire collection – for the first time since its inception in 1982 – at the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans, which was built in the 18th century by the architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. The guest art curator, Véronique Souben, has dubbed the new FRAC exhibition 90′.
90′ (90 minutes) corresponds to the average time spent visiting a Museum in France. The project therefore explores the temporal factors that limit yet shape exhibitions in a diffuse but real manner. This involved an in-depth analysis of the FRAC collection in terms of its content, density, transformations and various types of media, etc.
90′ experiments a new way of showcasing a collection by declaring the exhibition to be a place for expression and critical thought.
