Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker, former director of the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich, has been appointed director of the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington, USA. The Frye was established in the 1950s as a private foundation and museum. Its founding collection focuses on late nineteenth and early twentieth century European art with an emphasis on artists associated with the Munich Secession. In 2008 Birnie Danzker was appointed the Frye’s first Foundation Scholar and in 2009 she curated an exhibition for the Museum titled The Munich Secession and America.
Birnie Danzker, who will assume her new duties in October 2009, has curated numerous exhibitions of contemporary and historical art in Europe and North America and has published extensively. In recent years she has also been a regular contributor to Yishu, Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art. Among the international research and exhibition projects she co-curated are Art of Tomorrow, Hilla von Rebay and Solomon R. Guggenheim (2005), shown at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, Museum Villa Stuck, Munich, and the Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; and Shanghai Modern (2004-2005), a joint project of the City of Munich and the City of Shanghai. She was also Exhibition Director of The Short Century (2001-2002) curated by Okwui Enwezor and shown at the Museum Villa Stuck, Munich, the Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and PS1 / Museum of Modern Art New York. In the 1980s Birnie Danzker was curator and then director of the Vancouver Art Gallery in Canada.
